From its earliest years, the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) has been fundamentally changing and shaping how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. The Department of Psychological Medicine, part of the School of Academic Psychiatry, focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in different settings. About the role
This is a research associate post working across research projects on diabetes in pregnancy. These projects include:
- the development of a stigma intervention for women with gestational diabetes mellitus using mixed methods
- an observational study of psychological outcomes in women with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (SPROUT).
- qualitative studies of the experience of participating in a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) intervention for women with diabetes during pregnancy.
- support any new emerging studies such as assisting with literature reviews, grant writing, protocol development and patient and public involvement and engagement activities
The postholder will be involved in recruiting patients, data collection and data analysis (both qualitative and quantitative data). The postholder will be based on the Denmark Hill campus and will recruit from several clinical sites in southeast London and attend meetings at the Waterloo campus.
This post will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 18 months. Howveer the lateest possible contract end date is 5th August 2026.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD in biomedical sciences, mental health, nursing or a related field
- MSc or similar in psychology, nursing or a related field
- Background knowledge and research experience in women’s mental health and/or diabetes
- Experience in conducting qualitative studies
- Experience in conducting quantitative studies (e.g. epidemiology, public health)
- Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Strong planning and organisational skills, including ability to work to and meet deadlines
- Competent in conducting medical statistics such as multivariate regression
- Experience in writing and publishing research papers in high-quality journals as first author
Desirable criteria
- Experience in co-design or co-production
- Experience in public and patient engagement activities
- Experience in successful protocol and grant writing

Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their doctorate will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
