Description:
A Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position is available for an outstanding and ambitious materials scientist to undertake research in filled polymers for high voltage cable applications. The research is a National Grid Electricity Transmission innovation project delivered in close collaboration with the Pfisterer Group (https://www.pfisterer.com/). The project is part of a rapid growing research area at the University of Manchester on high voltage transmission cables to deliver a resilent network for net-zero.
The position will be held in the Advanced Nanomaterials Group and High Voltage Research Group. You will be developing a new generation of filled polymeric materials for applications high voltage cables. You will be formulating materials with various nanomaterials and measuring the resulting mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, with the latter conducted at transmission voltages. This work will develop a new scientific understanding of processing-structure-property relationship of these filled polymers and their interface with other materials. In addition to publishing high quality journal articles, you will be working with Pfisterer to translate the science into industrial applications.
You will have experience in the processing of elastomer and epoxy polymers, and the characterisation of their structure and processing. Preferably you will have experience in materials for high voltage applications. You should be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy in your research, and to write and present your work both internally and for wider dissemination. You should have a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and an emergent publication track record.
You will be part of a world-leading team working on nanomaterials and transmission cable development, across the Henry Royce Institute, National Graphene Institute and High Voltage Laboratories.
