Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Research and Innovation department’s Research Laboratory at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust as a Band 4 Research Associate Practitioner. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated scientist who is keen to work in a clinical research environment.
Our Laboratory works to support principal investigators undertaking research across a diverse range of clinical areas. The laboratory currently supports more than 80 active studies helping to deliver improved diagnostics, treatments, and medical devices for patients in Portsmouth and beyond.
This is a full time position, worked over a Monday to Friday pattern 37.5 hours a week (1.0 WTE). Very occasional evening, weekend or public holidays may be required with notice.
The post holder will work primarily at Queen Alexandra Hospital, but may also be required to support research activity at the John Pounds Centre Research Hub in Southsea. As a result of our strategic partnership with the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, in the future there may also be exciting opportunities to support research activity on the Isle of Wight, as part of the single corporate services model.
The Research Laboratory team is integral in performing pre-analytical procedures on biological samples and look after local aspects of sample management. This includes pre-analytical processing, storage, shipment, recording and tracking of samples as part of the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
Informal visits are highly encouraged and will allow you to discuss the post and see the working environment. Please note this role does NOT offer a training route into HCPC registration for Biomedical Sciences.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential

  • Minimum of three GCSEs including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject
  • A-level or Equivalent qualification in a Biological Science subject
  • Experience with electronic handling of data and good keyboard skills

Desirable

  • Foundation degree in a Health/Biological Science subject or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Previous experience of working in a laboratory

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Essential

  • An interest in clinical research
  • Ability to maintain standards of accuracy and hand to eye coordination in repetitive manual techniques
  • Ability to work in a methodical and organised manner
  • The ability to work using own initiative and without supervision
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to Prioritise work effectively to meet laboratory demands
  • Prepared to handle biological samples

Desirable

  • To have basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • A knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures within a laboratory
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory specific equipment and methods
