Description:

We are seeking to appoint a research associate to provide data science support for exploring the role of urban green and blue spaces in tackling health inequalities as part of our exciting GroundsWell Consortium. The interdisciplinary role is based in the Department of Geography and Planning but will see you work closely with team colleagues in the Department of Public Health, Policy & Systems as well.
The GroundsWell Consortium, funded by the UK Prevention Research Partnership, aims to drive community innovation by applying systems science that maximises the contribution of urban green and blue spaces to the primary prevention of, and reduction of inequalities in, non-communicable diseases in urban settings.
You will work with Professor Mark Green and the GroundsWell team in a supportive research culture in Liverpool, you will take responsibility for designing, analysing and disseminating a programme of co-produced research as part of GroundsWell. This will entail reviewing the literature and working with multiple large quantitative secondary datasets to develop a series of household metrics on access to green spaces that can be linked, for example, to individual-level electronic health care records to tease out their role on explaining health and wellbeing. You will have the aptitude and enthusiasm to apply data science methods for the analysis of these data, including potentially exploiting natural experiments. You will be involved in publishing and disseminating research outputs to relevant members in the GroundsWell consortium and the wider scientific community in a timely manner. You will also be involved in the evaluation of a series of policies around the impacts of green and blue spaces.
We seek a highly motivated team player with a degree or equivalent qualification (or relevant professional experience) in Geography, Public Health, Epidemiology, or an associated quantitative Social Science area. Datasets will be primarily quantitative and have a range of formats including geospatial data (e.g., locations of urban green and blue spaces, remote sensing), routinely collected electronic health records, and survey data.
You should be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline e.g. Geography, Public Health, Epidemiology or equivalent experience.
This is a fixed-term post, until September 2026.
