Description:

Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.
We are currently seeking a Research and Collections Coordinator, Marvin Gelber Print and Drawing Study Centre, to join our Curatorial team. Under the direction of the Curator and R. Fraser Elliott Chair, Prints and Drawings and Curator, Photography, and under the supervision of the Curators of Prints and Drawings and Photography, the incumbent coordinates all activities of the Marvin Gelber Print and Drawing Study Centre and the collection vault. Working in collaboration with curatorial, conservation and registration staff, participates in mounting exhibitions, researching proposed acquisitions, and organizing the care of the collections of prints, drawings and photographs in the vault. Coordinates the supervision and training of the departments’ interns and fellows, and the Study Centre volunteers.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates group visits to the Study Centre: provides guidance to instructors on use of the Study Centre and selection of works for student visit; schedules volunteers to monitor classes; orients group to the space – its history and use – and to protocols for using the space; ensures works are safe and properly handled throughout the visit.
  • Collaborates with curators, conservators, registration and collections management staff to ensure that the vault is properly organized and well maintained. Identifies major projects and locations movements and oversees their completion. Optimizes vault storage and increases object accessibility. Performs inventory checks as required. Ensures that storage requirements are routinely assessed and flagged. Identifies housing material required for the collection and ensures it is available for collection projects.
  • Oversees Open Door Wednesdays, including coordinating AGO staff and volunteers, scheduling in the P&D vault, adjusting roles based on staffing, and reviewing procedures for access as needed.
  • Assists the curators and the coordinator volunteers to vet and interview new volunteers, and coordinates and provides training sessions on how to use the space, search for objects in the database and locate objects in the vault. Develops volunteer projects and works with volunteers in the Study Centre.
  • With the curators, develops and coordinates projects for interns in Photography and Prints & Drawings. Coordinates and provides training sessions on how to use the space, search for objects in the database and locate objects in the vault. Supervises the progress of these projects.
