Description:

RESEARCH COMPUTING COORDINATION AND FACILITATION MANAGER- AVAILABLE ON A 2 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT OR SECONDMENT BASIS

The purpose of this role is to define and to support a ‘unified access’ service for research computing facilities available at Oxford. ‘Research Computing’ is here defined as research-related computing tasks which require capabilities not usually available using only a local personal computer, for scale, sensitivity or other reasons.
Oxford researchers currently have access to a range of Research Computing facilities. Oxford has committed to enhancing its available Research Computing capabilities and simplifying the process of identifying and accessing the appropriate resources for our researchers.
You will work with stakeholders across the University to catalogue and understand the currently available RC facilities and associated training offerings, gather feedback on potential gaps in provision and barriers to access, and devise, implement and promote a new University-level information and advisory service to act as a unified interface to Research Computing at Oxford.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify university-wide opportunities for improvement/optimisation of Oxford’s Research Computing facilities and training offerings, potentially through reusable resources from outside Oxford, and develop business cases for investment to take these forward
  • Take the lead in building and maintaining an online catalogue of relevant local, national and international Research Computing facilities and relevant available training
  • Manage and coordinate the complex and disparate group of stakeholders around Research Computing at Oxford in their progress towards a more unified community of practice
  • Specify and create Research Computing support pathways for Oxford researchers using (for example) the creation of online resources and organising outreach activities
  • Proactively assess and diagnose issues facing Oxford researchers in their use of and access to Research Computing solutions, and partner with them by providing advice and guidance to achieve their aims
  • Leading the service based upon the above elements, including reporting on agreed metrics, managing an associated budget and maintaining agreed service levels
  • Keeping abreast of current and emerging technological change within the global Research Computing community and generate content for researchers to help signpost them to technologies and innovations that might facilitate and augment their work
  • Identify opportunities for self-development in order to enhance your ability to deliver the above
