Description:
The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the University of Helsinki. In the beginning of 2017 FIMM joined the University of Helsinki’s new life science research centre, Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE, as an operational unit. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.
FIMM is currently seeking a
Research Coordinator
for a fixed term of two years with a possibility of extension.
We are seeking a qualified and motivated Research Coordinator for national and international research projects of Human Genomics Unit at FIMM led by Professors Samuli Ripatti and Aarno Palotie.
Samuli Ripatti, PhD, is the Director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), HiLIFE, Professor of Biometry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki and at Massachusetts General Hospital and Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He is chairing the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Complex Disease Genetics and EU H2020-funded Intervene Consortium. His research group studies genetic variation in the Finnish population and its effects on common complex disease risks and management. He is one of the pioneers in developing and testing the clinical translation of polygenic risk scores in disease prevention and early detection.
Professor Aarno Palotie, M.D., Ph.D. is the Research Director of the Human Genomics program at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), HiLIFE. He is also a faculty member at the Center for Human Genome Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
Prof. Palotie is the Scientific Director of the large FinnGen project (www.finngen.fi) that combines the genome and national health record data from 500 000 Finnish participants. He has chaired several large international research consortia, like the Sequencing Initiative Suomi, SISu (www.sisuproject.fi) combining all Finnish sequences for a data resource and variant catalogue, the SUPER project (www.superfinland.fi) collecting and studying genetics in over 10 000 Finnish psychosis patients, the International Headache Genetics Consortium (IHGC, www.headachegenetics.org) and the Northern Finland Intellectual Disability (NFID) study.
The candidate is expected to assist Professors Ripatti and Palotie and collaborating senior scientists at FIMM Human Genomics Unit to coordinate and manage the international research projects involved, for example, EU FP7/H2020 projects, NIH projects, the Academy of Finland Center of Excellence and other collaboration projects. Major tasks include monitoring project progress, liaising with financial and administrative staff, organizing and participating in project meetings, preparing reports and communicating with funding agencies and collaborators.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree with minimum two-years working experience, preferably in the field of life science related discipline. Experience in project coordination and management at international level (especially large-scale consortium management experience) is appreciated. The candidate should have fluency in written and spoken English (knowledge of Finnish or other European language will be an advantage), excellent organizational, communication and problem-solving skills, strong capability to work independently as well as cooperate harmoniously with administrative staff. The candidate should be available to travel abroad (occasionally and mostly within Europe).
This is a full-time position based in Biomedicum 2, Helsinki (www.biomedicum.fi), Finland, and is expected to start on October 1st, 2024 or earlier for an initial period of at least two years with a possibility of extension. A trial period of 6 months will be applied.
