QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in an Agricultural field and 2+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project.
  • Swine experience required.
  • Must be able to tolerate blood, animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
  • Must be tolerable and willing to learn and perform the following tasks: euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples and other procedures normal to animal husbandry.
  • Able prioritize when working when dealing with constrains that could be outside of his/her control.
  • Must understand experimental design for research experiments
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and strong multi-tasking abilities
  • PQA certification, CPR certification.
  • Learns and demonstrates capability/knowledge to operate and maintain feed systems including daily monitoring along with performing routine maintenance.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Excel, Outlook, RFID technology tags and wands (LeeO app and data dashboard, Exago ultrasound), PigKnows STAMP, supply app, and any other data software that is utilized in Smithfield
  • Learns and demonstrates knowledge and ability to operate and maintain all research equipment including but not limited to: scales, specialized ventilation/data controllers, cameras, sensors and water treatment systems.
  • Operates tractor, lawnmower and Hercules arm after properly trained
  • Operates basic power and had tools and pressure washer pump
  • Must be able to walk an average of 2 – 4 miles per day, occasionally up to 5 or 6.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs on a limited basis and be able to push, pull, and drag up to 100 lbs.
  • Climb in pens and feed bins when needed
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Responsibilities:

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow the Company’s animal welfare policies and procedures including providing a physical environment that meets the animal’s needs, providing access to adequate water and high quality feed, providing humane treatment of the animals, providing identification and appropriate treatment of animals in need of health care and following the guidelines for euthanasia.
  • Data collection, record keeping, feed system monitoring.
  • Schedules feed, trucks, and orders routine supplies. Prepares payroll and monitors research expenses.
  • Learn, understand, and implement all policies and procedures that relate to Biosecurity, EMS, SIPS and Animal Care.
  • Train and supervise staff.
  • Record keeping and compliance with SHPD report system.
  • Basic maintenance of farm equipment.
  • Composes weekly data collection summaries and research trial status updates and reports those to the Field Research Coordinator.
  • Ensures all equipment, machinery and vehicles are accounted for and properly maintained using daily, weekly and monthly checklists.
  • Research data collection and production charts, medication records.
  • Review and update research protocols when needed
  • Develop weekly and monthly action plans
  • Responsible for understanding all safety requirements of the job and for performing the job in compliance with the safety requirements.
  • Responsible for complying with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield subscribes.
  • Reads and understands the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site.
  • Responsible for maintenance and sanitation of the facilities.
  • Responsible to train employees and ensure they have a safe work environment.
  • Conduct farm inspections and be diligent to correct any non-compliance.
