Full time starting salary is normally in the range £34,980 to £44,263 with potential progression once in post to £46,974

Responsibilities:
ROLE SUMMARY
The main focus of this role is to support service users to develop high quality competitive funding applications to national peer-reviewed applied health sciences funding programmes, such as those provided by NIHR. This will include the provision of methodological and other relevant advice, critical review of research proposals, and signposting to relevant individuals and organisations. The post holder may be included as a co-applicant on the bids they support, depending on research skills and experience, contributing to their research portfolio.
The post holder will work collaboratively with the Central team in Newcastle and other satellite managers across the UK to provide specialist Public Health advice. The role will also include activities such as training in research methods and acting as a mentor for more junior staff. They will play an important part in furthering the NIHR’s aim of increasing the generation and use of public health research.
The role is appropriate for an individual with expertise in one or more methodological areas and an interest in and experience of public health research and the wider determinants of health.
MAIN DUTIES
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
- Act as a central point of contact for investigators considering applying to national peer-reviewed funders for non-NHS based public health research
- Support investigators to develop high quality, competitive applications for submission to funders for non-NHS based public health research, including sign-posting to appropriate support and relevant specialist advisors
- Support investigators to define and refine their research question and aims and objectives, select an appropriate study design and advise on resources required and issues of feasibility and ethics
- Maintain knowledge of current guidance for EDI, PPIE and inequalities in research to enable investigators to address these within their research
- Provide constructive and appropriate feedback on investigators’ draft research applications
- Work with RSS colleagues and other NIHR infrastructure to ensure investigators receive support to develop high quality applications for non-NHS based public health research
- Contribute to publicising opportunities to apply for funding for public health research to appropriate individuals, including those outside traditional areas health research
- Provide advice on initial research ideas arising from practitioners in public health, local authority and the voluntary and community sector
- Build on existing partnerships and develop new partnerships with the public health research community, HDRCs and NIHR PHR
- Undertake appropriate continuing professional development to maintain awareness of methodological developments and share knowledge and expertise with the wider PH Centre and RSS teams
- Aim to continue to obtain funding to support your own research and to publish research findings regularly in high quality, international and national academic journals and disseminate research findings appropriately to other audiences
- Contribute to training programmes including the development of training and resources relevant to your specialist methodology and important for the RSS PH
- Provide training in research methods appropriate to non-NHS research to researchers
- Mentor junior methodologist advisors to ensure progression and succession planning
