Description:

The Department of Earth Sciences are recruiting for a Research Finance Manager. The role of the Research Finance Manager is crucial in providing expert research funding finance support. This position will have full responsibility for managing all post award grant activity. Working closely with academics it will be expected that the post holder builds strong relationships so as to become a trusted and reliable advisor. The role is busy and varied with a significant amount of autonomy. It is expected that the Finance Manager will manage their own daily work load so as to complete all necessary tasks. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with many funder and University rules, so the post holder will need to feel comfortable digesting relevant terms and conditions and then communicating and managing their implementation.
The Research Finance Manager will work as part of a team that manages the research portfolios for the Departments of Chemistry, Materials and Earth Sciences. Although the role will have an allocated group of academics to manage, there will be times when the post holder will be expected to support academics across the cluster of Departments.
Responsibilities will include accurately setting up new projects including task allocation, completing award costings in the X5 system, co-ordinating with research services to ensure that collaboration agreements are finalised and that collaborators budgets are correctly accounted for in the Oracle R12 system, and reviewing award letters against applications submitted and raising any variances with the PIs. You will also be responsible for liaising with research groups and HR regarding vacant posts on grants to ensure funding is available, reviewing monthly balances on research pre-award, suspense accounts, control accounts etc, and meeting PIs routinely to review their financial position and provide solutions to problems including expenditure eligibility, reforecasts and guidance on budget virement on projects whilst maintaining the auditable standards on the project.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a strong team ethic and a focus on professional service provision. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to wok effectively with all stakeholders and inspire confidence of grant-holders and funders. You will also have strong communication skills, with the ability to give accurate, clear information in a timely manner and strong numeracy and accuracy with attention to detail. You will be educated to degree level, or with equivalent experience and substantial experience relevant to the role. You will have strong financial skills with respect to grant management and proven ability to use the X5 costing tool and Oracle R12 or similar, and strong IT skills especially in Excel (filter/analysis tools/pivot tables) and the ability to work effectively online.
