Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
Dr. Richard Cote, MD, is a professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Immunology as well as the Pathologist-in-Chief at Barnes Jewish Hospital. He is seeking an individual with experience to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment. Dr. Cote’s research focuses on the study of cancer, in particular the development of novel ways to detect cancer and evaluate its potential to progress. The lab is focused on human studies and primarily works with human specimens, including from clinical trials. There is no work on live animals. The Cote lab has developed novel ways to detect and study circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood, which have been identified as a negative prognostic factor for survival in many types of cancer. We examine these cells and cancer tissue using various forms of microscopy and immunofluorescence and are beginning to work on digital pathology solutions to improve our ability to provide cancer patients with personalized medical treatments.
The Cote lab also works in the area of Artificial Intelligence, where his team has made recent discoveries on using AI to evaluate histologic tissue sections to predict which patients will develop metastasis. The Cote lab collaborates with other labs at Wash U and around the country, with long-time collaborations with Caltech and University of Southern California, which provides multiple opportunities to learn from leaders in their fields. Work in the lab includes tissue culture, basic molecular techniques (PCR, in situ hybridization), fluorescent microscopy, and immunofluorescent staining.
