DESCRIPTION OF WORK UNIT

CSU hosts approximately 32,000 students in Fort Collins, Colorado, which is at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and 100 km north of Denver. The CEE Department at CSU is recognized both nationally and internationally for its research, education, and service and outreach programs and is ranked in the top 40 CEE programs in the USA. The CEE Department comprises 34 faculty, 7 research scientists/scholars, 15 research associates, and 10 administrative professionals. Our faculty are leaders in interdisciplinary research and education and collaborate with faculty in the Atmospheric Science Department, School of Global Environmental Sustainability, the Natural Resources Ecology Laboratory, and the Ecosystem Science and Sustainability Department, and with researchers around the world. Our water-related programs are designated a CSU Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence. Annual research expenditures by the CEE Department have averaged $14.2M since 2016, including interdisciplinary research and education programs like the NSF U-WIN Center, CLEAN Center, NSF InterFEWS, and the NIST Center for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning. POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University seeks a highly motivated Research Scientist to work under the supervision of Prof. Hussam Mahmoud, George T. Abell Professor in Infrastructure and Director, Structural Laboratory. The Research Scientist will play a vital role in advancing our understanding of wildfire behavior and its impact on physical infrastructure as well as social, economic, and ecological systems. This position involves designing and implementing research projects focused on fire behavior, dynamics and optimal life-cycle mitigation strategies in communities and in the wildland. The associate will collect and analyze data through field studies, modeling, and simulations to generate actionable insights. This position will engage with local communities to communicate findings and support outreach efforts aimed at educating stakeholders about wildfire risks.
Additionally, the role entails assisting in grant writing to secure funding, managing project timelines and budgets, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols during research activities. This position will also prioritize continuous professional development to stay updated on advances in wildfire science.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field by the date of hire.
  • Must have strong publishing record in reputable journals, contributing valuable insights to the field.
  • Proficient in utilizing computational tools for community wildfire behavior modeling in wildlands and communities.
  • Experience conducting optimization analysis within a life-cycle context.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive experience in wildfire dynamics and behavior in wildlands and communities.
  • Conducting comprehensive literature reviews, preparing detailed reports and academic papers, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to integrate diverse perspectives.
  • Collaborative experience with interdisciplinary teams to address complex engineering challenges.
