JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Research Specialist II to join our Insourcing Solutions team, located in Poolesville, MD.
As the Research Specialist II, you will provide oversight, direction and mentoring of the NIA Research team. Maintain and monitor the health, technical, and customer service aspects within the customer’s varied animal care environments. Maintain performance levels consistent with and according to company standards for the LARC 8 contract at The National Institutes of Health supporting the National Institute on Aging.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provides training and oversight to Veterinary Technicians to monitor performance and accurate completion of tasks in accordance with the contract Statement of Work and in a professional manner.
  • Prepares and submits written reports, charts, logs and inventories as requested. Provides data specifically for the contract monthly deliverable.
  • Prepare and distribute individualized animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments to study animals according to protocols.
  • Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.).
  • Perform technical procedures including: femoral blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic tissue collection and processing, euthanasia, anesthesia, food or liquid consumption, drug administration (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV and ID), TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, restraint and handling of animals, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed.
  • Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies.
  • Assist in the collection of on-going behavioral testing and data collection.
  • Perform animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment.
  • Collect, preserve, and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples.
  • Participate in study related necropsies and tissue harvest.
  • Maintain and foster good working relationship with clients on daily basis.
  • Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and investigative staff.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

The following are minimum requirements related to the Research Specialist II position.

  • BS or MS (preferred) degree in a scientific discipline or have an AA degree and related practical experience.
  • Five years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility to include technical procedures with NHP required. Minimum of one year in a supervisory role.

The pay range for this position is $35 USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
