Description:
The Enterics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a full-time Research Specialist II to assist with ongoing projects in the lab. The Research Specialist will be principally responsible for performing laboratory tests and/or experiments and providing analytical and administrative assistance for several studies involving collaborations from institutions worldwide. The Enterics Group is currently studying adult diarrheal disease in Cameroon, the genomic epidemiology of cholera in Africa, cholera diagnostic evaluation in cholera endemic areas, among other things.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master’s degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively.
- Ability to speak French or Portuguese.

Responsibilities:
- Laboratory duties include microbiology (i.e. culture and identification of specific bacteria), ELISA, immunoblot methods, electrophoresis, PCR, qPCR, and basic tissue culture.
- The candidate should be able to follow established procedures or protocols and work with their supervisor to develop or optimize new protocols or assays and design experimental approaches for research projects as needed.
- Work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
- A successful candidate must be highly organized and is required to maintain inventories for samples and lab supplies as well as keep a laboratory notebook detailing the results of all experiments.
- A successful candidate must be able to work independently and under limited supervision. This may include making significant contributions to various aspects of research efforts such as troubleshooting, independent decision making, and training/guidance of other lab personnel.
- The position requires work with biohazardous materials and the candidate must follow all necessary safety precautions for working with such materials.
- Monitors supply inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
- The candidate may have the opportunity to assist with data analysis, advanced molecular analysis (VNTR, WGS) and make scientific contributions to writing manuscripts and grants. The research specialist will be expected to help prepare figures and tables for manuscripts and assist with writing up results as needed. - This position may require international travel 1-3 times per year to prepare and conduct laboratory trainings for partner organizations abroad.
