Position: Research Technician
Location: Richmond, BC
General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by working to develop the world’s first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid. Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Research Technician will operate lithium metal casting and processing equipment, perform laboratory experiments, maintain process documentation, and provide analysis of experimental results. The position is primarily located on site at General Fusion’s facilities in Richmond, BC, and may require some shift work or flexible hours.

RELEVANT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • 2-4 years relevant experience
  • Hands-on disposition
  • Strong multi-disciplinary skillset with experience installing, operating, and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems
  • Basic machine shop skills (manual mill, lathe, bandsaw, etc.) and experience with power tools
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret outcomes/results and communicate findings
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Positive attitude to repetitive tasks and attention to detail
  • Willingness to operate in a fast-paced environment with rapidly evolving priorities
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to use and/or pick up basic computer programs (Excel, Word, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams, Slack etc.)
  • Ability to lift 20 kg
  • Strong, team-oriented safety mindset

Preferred:

  • Hands-on experience working with a wide variety of mechanical and electrical equipment in a research or product development lab environment.
  • Experience operating pilot scale and prototype equipment
  • Chemical handling experience
  • Glovebox operation and maintenance experience
  • Experience handling molten metals
  • Experience with rotating machinery
  • Experience with lifting equipment (forklift, gantry cranes, rigging etc.)
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Experience with vertical lathe operation
  • Welding and fabrication skills
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD design software (SolidWorks)

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skillsets. This role requires individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills, and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

Responsibilities:

  • Assemble and operate custom-built equipment in the laboratory
  • Set up, operate, and clean lithium casting equipment
  • Perform machining operations on lithium (e.g. lathe, roller)
  • Safely handle high temperature and rotating equipment
  • Assist with maintenance and upgrades to equipment
  • Perform routine and one-time experiments
  • Handle materials in a glovebox environment
  • Champion safe work practices
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and efficient workspace
  • Prepare documentation, present results at team meetings
  • Proactively contribute to a great work environment
  • Work independently, while taking initiative to gather necessary information from colleagues and documentation before commencing work
