The Department of Bio log y at Texas A&M University is responsible for research and teaching within the vast disciplines of the bio log ical sciences, from molecular cell bio log y to ecology and evolutionary bio log y . Our faculty perform cutting edge research in a wide array of bio log ical sciences in the laboratory and in the field. Our graduate research programs prepare scientists for careers in academia, industry and government and enhance our understanding of the central role of bio log ical systems in the global environment. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Two years of related experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in basic computer/typing skills
- Strong organizational skills including laboratory notebook maintenance
- Willingness to develop new skills and train others in acquired skills
- Willingness to work with fruit flies
- Ability to lift small equipment and gas containers of small to medium weight
- Ability to lift and move medium weight objects to use industrial-grade food boiler and fillers and canisters of compressed CO2 short distances within the lab
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field or commensurate experience in a biology research laboratory
- Experience with using fruit flies in research
- Experience in microscopy, especially confocal microscopy
- Knowledge of laboratory safety
- Knowledge of maintaining fruit fly stock collections and fly husbandry
- Knowledge of ordering supplies via AggieBuy
Responsibilities:
- Research: Actively participate in lab research. Attend meetings and seminars hosted by the lab and department. Carry out experiments with direction from PI. Provide basic training to undergraduate researchers.
- Animal Husbandry: Maintain adequate fly food stock by cooking fly food and pouring into stock vials. Maintain health of lab fly stocks by refreshing food regularly. Ensure adequate supply of CO2 in lab for fly husbandry by taking inventory and placing orders as needed.
- Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain adequate stock of lab supplies by taking inventory and placing orders as needed. Track and inventory new orders. Assist with invoice tracking.
- Record Keeping: Assure lab records are properly maintained, including chemical safety data sheets, laboratory notebooks, animal stock lists, etc. Update fly stock list. Assist with digital data keeping organization.
