Description:
The Department of International Health is seeking a Research Technologist. The incumbent will perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures, as well as perform laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction. The assays to be carried with include standard culture of bacteria in culture media, detection bacterial and viral agents using PCR and qPCR, tests for antibodies using ELISA and agglutination. In addition, the incumbent will carry out or assist with laboratory studies involving laboratory animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Additional assays may be developed during the course of the projects.
The assays will be recorded consistently in the lab notebooks and will include a detailed description of the methods and results of each assay. The results of the assays will also be recorded in a standard format appropriate to the assay, such as excel or Prism or other database. These results will also be summarized by preparing data tables with an interpretation of the results. The incumbent will also identify problems or inconsistencies in the results and bring these to the attention of the investigator or supervisor so that issues can be resolved.
They will use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and will gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience. They will understand the role of senior lab members and accept constructive guidance and will gain increasing skills and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in a biomedical laboratory.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Experience with ELISA and other similar antibody assays.
