About the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science is a research collaboration spanning eight Australian universities and 21 partners including Australian and international companies and international universities. The Centre is funded for seven years from the Australian Government to undertake innovative and potentially transformational research. Key to Centre’s success is the training of around 100 PhD students and 50 postdoctoral researchers in a cultural environment consistent with the Centre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) plan.

About the Role
As the COMBS Research Training and Development Coordinator, you will support the Centre Director, Chief Operating Officer and EDI Committee to deliver the Centre’s ambitious research training and development activities, and to recruit and support a diverse workforce. Success in this role requires a passion for building a positive and nurturing culture, and an understanding of both the systemic barriers faced by people from non-traditional backgrounds in STEM fields, as well as knowledge of practical ways of addressing these barriers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Management: Develop and implement an integrated research training program, coordinating scholarships, fellowships, internships, mentoring, and capability development initiatives.
  • Support EDI Initiatives: Work closely with the EDI Committee to develop, manage, and evaluate EDI activities, including cultural surveys and data collection related to recruitment, retention, and promotion.
  • Data and Reporting: Collate performance data and assist in translating these into regular reports for the Centre’s Executive Committee, board, and Annual Reports.
  • Culture Building: Foster a culture of respect and inclusion by embedding EDI principles into all aspects of the Centre’s support for students and early career researchers.
  • Administrative Support: Provide secretariat and administrative support to the EDI Committee and assist with other duties as directed by the COO.

To be successful in this position, you will have the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research training programs in the higher education sector.
  • Passion, knowledge, and an understanding of the opportunities and obstacles faced by EDI initiatives, preferably in STEM, higher education and/or research organisations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship building, communication skills, including the ability to work positively, sensitively and effectively with a broad range of stakeholders, including junior and senior staff, culturally diverse people and external organisations.
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing projects and initiatives that aim to build and maintain positive and nurturing workplace culture, preferably in an academic research setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently, using initiative and prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment with excellent attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • High level administrative skills, including minute taking, assisting with event organisation, experience using Microsoft Office software.
  • Qualifications: Relevant qualification and/or relevant experience.
