Required qualifications:

  • Masters degree and 1 or more years of research training.
  • Experience in vascular biology and/or biomedical engineering, physiology, or related fields
  • Ability to work independently in a scientific environment and conduct experiments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to supervise, manage and teach junior laboratory assistants/medical students/residents
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to stand at a laboratory bench or hood for extended periods of time and lift up to 40 lbs
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed by project
  • Must be willing to work in a large animal OR
  • Must be willing to take an occasional overnight shift

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with vascular biology and/or bioengineering
  • Experience or interest in large animal models
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with any of the following equipment/techniques: muscle bath, immunohistochemistry/ microscopy, cell culture, apoptosis assays, metabolomics/proteomics
  • Analytical skills to process and varied scientific problems and identify solutions
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to follow directions/protocols.
  • Meticulous organizational and time management skills
  • Experience with LabChart, Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint or similar programs for data management and presentation creation

About the Job
The Division of Basic and Translational Research (within the Department of Surgery) is seeking a motivated and driven researcher to join the lab of a NIH and DOD-funded projects related to vascular biology and physiology. This position will be the senior staff researcher and will collaborate with other labs to complete work outlined in grants which includes but not limited to helping to procure samples as outlined in the grant in a large animal lab, running assays, assess and analyze results as required to support the advancement of our preclinical research studies. This individual will also have a supervisory and management role for junior trainees in the laboratory.
Responsibilities:

(70%) Conduct experiments using animal data. Extensive sample analysis is required. Collect data for pre-clinical and clinical date.

  • Muscle bath maintenance and use
  • Cytokine Assays
  • Immunohistochemical analysis
  • Working with Core services for set-up of multi-omic analyses
  • Assist as needed with large animal studies
  • Troubleshoot technical problems
  • Evaluate new and developing models
  • Use basic statistical methods to analyze data
  • Present findings to research team

(25%) Data Analysis and Laboratory Management

  • Perform data entry and keep detailed records of experiments and procedures
  • Generate experiment reports; analysis of muscle bath data
  • Use basic statistical methods to analyze data
  • Present findings to research team
  • Manage sample repository/biobank of samples
  • Teach/manage junior laboratory assistants/trainees

(5%) Additional duties

  • Assist with ongoing R&D operations as time allows and as assigned by primary investigator
  • Frequent meetings with the primary investigator
  • Participation in Translational Center for Resuscitative Trauma Care initiatives as assigned
  • Other duties as required
  • Potential visits to animal labs at Mayo Clinic and USUHS (Washington, DC) for collaborative studies
