Overview of the Position
The Hartford’s International Actuarial team is a team of strategic business partners responsible for delivering expert consultation via pricing and other analytical tools, financial/reserving analysis, and capital modelling advice. This includes carrying out reserving across Syndicate 1221 and additional entities. Our team’s mission is to enable profitable growth through proactive analytical insights and solutions.
This position reports to the Reserving Lead and will work in close partnership with Underwriting, Finance, and Claims, as well as The Hartford’s U.S. Actuarial team. This individual should have strong attention to detail, technical and analytical skills, and be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

This individual will be responsible for supporting the Reserving Lead in enhancing International reserving analysis, identifying and delivering improved insights and efficiencies in the smooth running of the reserving process. This will include preparing analytical tools and working closely with the business actuaries in reserving and ad hoc analysis. They will also work with the The Hartford’s U.S. Actuarial team to leverage centrally-managed data and reserving tools. Further responsibilities include:

  • Develop new analytical tools and enhance current tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reserve reviews and to deliver improved insights to business partners.
  • Identify and develop efficiencies, including automation, in the reserving and booking process
  • Support quarterly reserve analyses with business actuaries, including preparing exhibits for the Reserve Committee and executive leadership.
  • Support and carry out reserving deep-dive analysis, including emerging risks
  • Assist in actuarial analysis for the Operating Plan, including Syndicate Business Forecast (SBF) and Loss Ratio Planning processes.
  • Partner with external actuaries to provide information and transparency to our reserving data and process to support critical audit and Statement of Actuarial Opinion (SAO) activities.
  • Partner with Underwriting and Claims to harvest expert input for modelling reserve risk volatility and parameterisation input for capital modelling.
  • Partner with actuarial and other colleagues from The Hartford to share reserving best practices and insights.
  • Complete ad hoc requests from management, regulators and auditors as required, including support of pricing, capital and reporting analyses.
  • Monitor and influence data quality—initiate and participate in the development of procedures to improve data quality. Investigate how data resources both internal and external to the company can be leveraged to bring insight to the business.

Experience & Skills

  • Candidates wanting to transition their career into a general insurance actuarial team or strong recent university graduates will be considered.
  • Familiarity with actuarial techniques (particularly reserving)
  • Must possess strong attention to detail, with a track record of an accurate and timely work product
  • Must exhibit a process efficiency and continuous improvement mindset
  • Ability to independently diagnose problems and recommend solutions
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships within the actuarial team and across functions
  • Strong project management and teamwork skills; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (particularly Excel)
  • London (Lloyd’s) market experience is preferred, but not required
  • Familiarity with databases and SQL, R, Python or equivalent programmes is a plus
