POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Program Manger, the Resource Nurse is responsible for the interdepartmental activities related to the day to day operations and patient flow of the Emergency Department. The Resource Nurse will be an active member of the department leadership team and will contribute to the development of strategies that will improve the overall functioning of the department creating effective patient flow and a positive patient experience with a strong emphasis on customer service and the achievement of the highest quality of patient focused care.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Registered Nurse with Current General Class Registration required.
  • Certified in BCLS and recertify annually required
  • Certified in ACLS required
  • CTAS training and current with renewals required
  • Completion of Coronary Care One Certificate within previous two years or current usage of arrhythmia analysis within previous two years, to ACLS standards required. Must be able to demonstrate arrhythmia interpretation during orientation period.
  • Current Patient Assessment Course within 3 years required (exempt if newly graduated within the past 3 years). Timeline extended if currently using assessment skills in an emergent/urgent/triage environment.
  • Defibrillation and External pacemaker to ER department standards required.
  • Successful completion of exam to administer lifesaving medication required within orientation period.
  • IV Therapy and IV Med administration course required or demonstrated recent experience in an acute care Emergency Room setting
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from a recognized University or in progress (equivalent combination of Education and Experience will be considered) considered an asset
  • Preference given to nurses with PALS, TNCC, Certified Emergency Care Course, Certified Canadian Emergency Nursing Certificate.

Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience working with an Emergency Department is required
  • Previous experience within a Team Lead role will be considered.
  • Experience participating in ED care team, unit council, and various Leadership meetings an asset
  • Experience facilitating positive change in a high acuity and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent attendance and work record required
  • Committed and demonstrated excellence in effective teamwork skills, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution and critical thinking
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of P4R metrics and associated targets
  • In-depth knowledge of LEAN methodology – green belt, considered an asset
  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communications skills in relation to working with patients across the care continuum.

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors and ensures compliance with clinical standards as well as unit-based policies, procedures and clinical practice guidelines
  • Facilitates the timely offload, admission, transfer and discharge of patients within the unit
  • Responsible for ensuring bedside rounding at the beginning of each shift, mitigating barriers and tracking and communicating P4R performance to Manager
  • Enhances the flow of department, ability to be flexible and creative to ensure timely, safe care to patients
  • Work with leadership to implement and sustain process improvement initiatives
  • Daily huddle in collaboration with Manager and commitment to leading huddle in the absence of the Manger including discussion of hospital and unit initiatives, performance data and dialogue with invited guests
  • Ensuring staff and patient safety through knowledge of Code policies and procedures
  • Ability to provide mentoring and guidance to both novice and experienced nurses within the unit on issues related to patient flow and CNO professional standards
  • Compliant with the unit’s Resource Nurse task list
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the direct manager.
