SUMMARY

This position assists with the coordination and guidance of volunteers at Regional Parks sponsored restoration and shoreline or trail clean-up events. The position may also assist with other outreach events as required. Coordination includes event prep and wrap up, providing site and invasive plant species specific information, demonstration of removal techniques, reviewing safety procedures, delineating work areas and monitoring the work and recognition of volunteers. This position also collaborates with the Environmental Conservation Specialist and Operations staff with regards to the running of these events.

  • Experience working with volunteers and guiding them in their work
  • Excellent communication and public relation skills
  • Excellent team building and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge of the flora and fauna of Southern Vancouver Island
  • Knowledge of invasive plant species, their impact on the environment and proper removal techniques
  • Computer skills that include knowledge of electronic mail, Internet, word processing software (MS Word) and data management (Excel).
  • Must be able to take a diplomatic and professional approach to work
  • Must be flexible, cooperative, reliable, self-motivated, and a solution-oriented thinker
  • Proven commitment to environmental issues and an interest in outdoor activities
  • Basic Knowledge of Regional Parks policies, procedures and regulatory bylaws
  • Must be physically fit and able to work in an outdoors settingand participate in invasive species removal projects

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Graduation
  • A minimum of 1 year directly related experience

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with maintaining sound volunteer guidelines and procedures within the goals and risk management standards of Regional Parks
  • Provides background information to the volunteers specific to the site and the invasive species being removed, or garbage collection
  • Assists to ensure that volunteers are using proper techniques for removing invasive species or garbage, following safety procedures and working within designated areas
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance and storage of volunteer program tools and supplies
  • Maintains records pertaining to volunteer statistics, monitoring of the project site and any other reporting as required
  • Assists with ensuring that all volunteers are registered as Regional Parks volunteers and have signed off on all required paperwork before beginning work
  • Assists with the recruitment and recognition of restoration volunteers
  • Purchases supplies as needed
  • Provides routine guidance to volunteers in their work and communicating as needed with staff who directly work on restoration projects, or with staff that work in the park where the event is taking place
  • Assists with providing opportunities for volunteers to assist with tasks that are suited to their abilities
  • Assisting with the resolution of problems arising between volunteers
  • Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD
  • Performs other related duties as required
