Job Overview:
RWJBarnabas Health is looking to hire a full-time Registered Nurse in West Orange, NJ to serve as a clinical nurse and diabetes clinical coordinator for the RWJBH Northern Region Pediatric Endocrinology Practice based at the Cooperman Barnabas Pediatric Specialty Center in West Orange, NJ Locations served are the Pediatric Specialty Center in West Orange, Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • New Jersey RN License
  • BLS Certification approved by AHA
  • Minimum 2 year of RN experience
  • EMR experience required
  • CDCES diabetes educator certification required
  • Must be willing to travel between all three locations as needed

Preferred:

  • BA/BS/BSN degree
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Epic experience preferred

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • New Jersey RN License
  • BLS Certification approved by AHA

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day Shift, 40 hours/week
  • Full-time Schedule (travel between West Orange and Newark)

Essential Functions:

Coordination 20%

  • Develop standards along with Medical Director, Pediatric Endocrinology (MDPE) for inpatient and outpatient diabetes care to be used at all pediatric diabetes centers to encompass:
  • Creation and ongoing updating of Inpatient and outpatient teaching protocols with Epic integration whenever possible
  • Development of care pathways to provide higher level of intervention to patients at risk or under poor control with incorporation of integrated behavioral health model when appropriate.
  • Providing staffing level recommendations for diabetes educators and clinical staff
  • Other areas as identified by MDPE
  • Develop and implement strategy along with MDPE to integrate clinical aspects of pediatric endocrinology services first in the northern region and system wide when appropriate/possible
  • Diabetes and endocrine clinical calls from patients and school nurses
  • Prior authorizations growth hormone / diabetes / MRIs / other
  • Endocrine stimulation testing
  • Other areas as identified by MDPE
  • Develop staff training guidelines

  • Facilitate day-to-day efficient operation of pediatric endocrinology clinical services by
  • Communicating with providers at the different locations about day to day needs
  • Monitoring electronic task queues to identify patterns signaling need to adjust logistics
  • Personally assisting in completion of work queues when needed
  • Planning for staffing deficiencies such as vacations / medical leave / etc
  • Work with MDPE toward achieving and maintaining US News & World Report and ADA diabetes center recognition

Clinical 80%

  • Perform extensive outpatient education of newly diagnosed patients with diabetes including caregivers.
  • Establish RPM monitoring program to enable billing for blood sugar review between visits
  • See diabetes patients prior to physicians at the time of their scheduled appointments and download meter / pump / sensor and make recommendations to the physician as to insulin regimen changes.
  • Answer diabetes related phone call and patient portal messages from patients and their families regarding blood sugar review.
  • Assist with transition to college, provides supportive documentation regarding accommodations
  • Assist in the development of school care plans along with families and physicians
  • Communication with School Nurses regarding care plans and school related issues
  • Certificate of Medical Necessity paperwork for diabetes supplies, insulin pumps, and continuous

glucose monitors

General nursing duties this position may include some of the following duties:

  • Administers immunizations, and injections as directed by physician.
  • Assists physician in examination and treatment of patients and in all special procedures including minor surgery as required.
  • Assists the physician with patients including preparing patients and the examination rooms, taking initial medical history for the chart, taking vital signs, making lab and x-ray appointments, and explaining the preparations to the patients and documenting same.
  • Assists with the preparation of equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Handles all prescription refills and call-ins to pharmacies and patients.
  • Maintains and keeps examination rooms and treatment areas clean, including, washes and dries instruments used, and prepares sterilization as required. Keeps examination rooms properly stocked with supplies.
  • Maintains lab log book and record of OSHA related logs.
  • Maintains medical inventories according to established par levels; orders supplies, checks deliveries for accuracy; reconciles discrepancies; reviews bills for accuracy; submits bills to Practice Manager or Assistant Office Manager.
  • Other duties may consist of notifying patients of lab results, administering injectable medications prescribed by the physician; in house lab work and specimen preparations for microscope.
  • Performs laboratory and diagnostic procedures, i.e. venipunctures, urinalysis, glucose and hemoglobin assessments and preparation of lab specimens and forwards to appropriate lab for processing.
  • Provides general nursing care to patients. Handles medical problems, treatments and diagnoses, and follows medical directions given by the physician.
  • Provides scheduling or general problem issues to Practice Manager and operational issues to the Director of Operations.
  • Receives and handles phone calls as directed by physician.
  • Removes lab reports from printer and attaches to chart for MD to review.
  • Removes sutures, cleans wounds and applies dressings as directed by physician.
  • Responsible for interpretation and implementation of physician orders.
  • Responsible for medical education needs of patients.
  • Responsible for proper handling and storage of all medications stored in the office. Periodically checks expiration dates on inhouse medications and immunizations.
  • Reviews scheduled patient s charts for all documents, obtain documents if absent.
