Responsibilities:

WHAT THE ROLE WILL INVOLVE

The responsibilities of your role will include the following:

  • Act as the safety Subject Matter Expert on a variety of projects; supplying knowledge and experience in the defence environment for the development of real-time software and electronic systems in the function of Safety Engineering
  • Plan and carry out safety management activities, with review by safety peers, for project scope commensurate with applicable standards at the required Safety Integrity Level
  • Lead development and maintenance of companies Safety Management Systems, in support of delivering safety critical systems to contractual requirements (e.g IEC 61508, IC 61511, ISO 62061, ISO 13849)
  • Lead in the derivation and assessment of safety requirements, understanding how to achieve those requirements and verify they have been met, including SIL assessments and safety justifications on the design.
  • Manage safety and environmental arguments to support the safety case in compliance with all relevant standards, legislations and regulations
  • To lead safety review meetings with safety stakeholders for purposes of Hazard Identification and Analysis (HIA) and safety / environmental risk reduction
  • Lead in the use of both quantitative and qualitative techniques for analysing failures of both software and hardware, using appropriate:
  • Hazard identification and analysis
  • Statistical techniques
  • Qualitative and quantitative reliability/failure analysis using such methods as FMEA, FMEDA and Fault Tree Analysis
  • Prepare and maintain equipment hazard logs and safety reports
  • Carry out functional failure analyses to determine hardware and system reliability
  • Carry out software and Programmable Electronic System (PES) assessments of process and documentation against applicable development standards
  • Provide safety support to lifecycle review meetings and carry out reviews of engineering deliverable documents
  • Carry out internal and sub-contractor safety audits and support audits from an externally appointed Independent Safety Auditor (ISA)
  • Provide technical leadership for the Safety Engineering team and help with development of junior members of the team
  • Line manage safety engineering team

The role requires the following experience and skills:

  • Equivalent of 8+ years’ safety engineering experience working on complex engineering projects.
  • Experienced in safety critical design and development processes.
  • Experience working with control systems
  • Experience working with relevant functional safety regulations, standards, and legislation.
  • Able to understand detail and a low level of fidelity in technical decision making.
  • Strong and experienced people leader
  • Able to communicate with customers inside and outside of own department and business to explain and interpret safety decisions.
  • Able to plan, organise and coordinate safety and environmental related project work, including delegating appropriately
