The Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the health and safety of employees. This position involves developing, implementing, and monitoring occupational health and safety programs to create, foster, and maintain a safe working environment. The Safety Specialist collaborates with various teams and facilities to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement preventive measures. Additionally, they are responsible for keeping abreast of relevant regulations and standards to ensure compliance. The HSE Coordinator plays an important role in providing training and information to employees and worksites to ensure the success of our Safety Program. The Safety Specialist must be able to work independently and be willing to travel as required to our other facilities. This is a full-time position located in our Dartmouth facility with responsibility for our other facilities.

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years OHS/EHS experience in manufacturing or a related field;
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety

Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of and experience implementing Corporate OH&S policies and initiatives.
  • Experience with safety compliance software would be an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to prepare and communicate OH&S reports.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and Publisher.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training material.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
  • Proven ability to work with demanding deadlines, independently and with a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude

Responsibilities:

Program Development and Implementation - Implement and maintain comprehensive OHS programs and policies in accordance with provincial regulations and relevant standards. Conduct regular risk assessments and collaborate with Supervisors and other team members to identify, address, and mitigate potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies.
Training and Education - Provide OHS training to employees, contractors, and other relevant stakeholders. Develop educational materials and resources to promote awareness of safety practices and procedures, including new hire orientation.
Incident Investigation - Work with other team members to investigate, analyze workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses. Prepare detailed reports on incidents, identifying direct and indirect causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
Regulatory Compliance - Stay up to date and informed about changes in occupational health and safety laws and regulations. Ensure the organization’s compliance with all relevant OHS standards and guidelines.
Safety Inspections - Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify and rectify potential safety hazards and ensure compliance with accepted standards. Collaborate with supervisors and project teams to address and resolve safety issues effectively.
Environmental Compliance – Ensure site compliance with provincial regulations, standards, and rules, including reporting requirements.
Record Keeping - Maintain accurate records of incidents, inspections, and training sessions. Prepare and submit required report to regulatory agencies as necessary.
Communication and Collaboration - Foster a culture of safety by promoting open communication regarding safety concerns, expectations, and building relations. Collaborate with management, employees, and external stakeholders to address safety-related issues including the active participation and documentation of the JOHS Committee.
Continuous Improvement – Assist in monitoring and evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of OHS programs and policies. Recommend and implement improvements to enhance overall worksite safety.
