Job Description
Working at the New Canaan YMCA provides an opportunity to strengthen our community and change lives. Every Y employee plays a role in empowering young people, improving the health and wellbeing of our members, and inspiring good works.
Our School-Age and Camp Y-Ki Director will be responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing creative, high-quality programs including:
Camp Y-Ki - an exciting outdoor camp experience for school age children (grades K-8) offering activities such as swimming, archery, art & crafts, sports, camp songs, outdoor adventures and special events, all geared to help campers build self-esteem, confidence, independence and responsibility.
School-Age Programming - oversee all aspects of youth recreation, including oversight of the Youth Program Coordinator. School-age programming will include afterscool programs such as Kids Unlimited, Ski/Board club, Middle School Madness, and Vacation Camp programs during days off from school.
Community Relations & Events – network with other area groups and organizations to collaborate on activities that support youth development and healthy living, and host free community events each year
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Human Services, or related field desired
Minimum of two years’ experience developing, implementing, and evaluating programs for youth.
Minimum of one-year supervisory experience.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Creative thinker with a history of applying innovation in programming.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build community relationships.
Basic skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Must be organized, with strong attention to detail.
Ability to design programs that appeal to a diverse population.
Ability to teach/lead children and adults.
Ability to supervise and instruct other staff in all program areas.
Flexible, highly organized, and patient individual.
Must be able to present oneself professionally with peers, staff, community, and New Canaan YMCA members.
Essential Functions
· Regularly demonstrate behaviors in each of the YMCA Four Core Values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
· Direct and supervise program activities to meet YMCA objectives (see detailed list below).
· Work closely with YMCA Directors as needed and attend monthly Director staff meetings.
· Co-supervise the Youth Program Coordinator.
· Responsible for the development, implementation, and adherence to the budget, financial and business procedures of the YMCA.
· Support the Preschool and Family Events Director with special events; encourage staff participation in order to ensure the events success.

· Strong, effective communication skills with all ages.

Attend YMCA trainings as assigned by supervisor.

Youth Development:

School Age (elementary through middle school) Programming

  • Co-supervise the Youth Program Coordinator in the areas of youth recreation, summer camp, and birthday parties.
  • Support the Youth Program Coordinator with development and implementation of programs currently running and would like to continue: Ski/Board, Youth at the Y, Middle School Madness.
  • Support the Youth Program Coordinator to create additional afterschool programs recreation for school-age and middle school children.
  • Oversee the hiring and training of all staff/volunteers in youth recreation programs.
  • Supervise the Kids Unlimited afterschool program following OEC requirements and remain in ratio each weekday.
  • Hire and train all Kids Unlimited staff to meet OEC requirements.
  • Plan and implement week-long and day-long Vacation Camp Programs for all days off from school listed on the public-school calendar. Following ratios and OEC requirements.
  • Awareness of latest trends relative to population served.
  • With the Youth Program Coordinator develop, implement, and oversee program activities which meet the needs of the community.Recruit, coordinate, and assist in training of staff/volunteers.
