High School graduate or equivalent and must be Police Officer’s Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) certified or have satisfactorily completed training to become P.O.S.T. certified.

In addition the following requirements must also be met:

  • Citizen of the United States
  • At least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class D driver’s license
  • Successfully pass entry level requirements and testing (medical and psychological)
  • Must not have been convicted of, or pled guilty (or entered a plea of Nolo Contendere) to any felony charges
  • Must not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States. (Note: Honorable discharge waivers may be granted for the following type separations: (1) entry level separations; or (2) general discharge under honorable conditions).
  • Good physical condition
  • Good communication skills

This is a year-round position with primary responsibility for University schools (K-12) during the school year to include off site support and security for University Schools events such as athletics events or other school-related activities as needed. In the non-academic months, the position will patrol the university main campus and events and therefore has dual reporting to Police Services and University Schools.
This is a grant funded position contingent upon grant funding.
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday
7:30am – 4pm on all K12 school days and other working days.
Officers may be required to work night, weekends and holidays.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk considerable distances on campus. The employee frequently is required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and color vision.

Additional Position Information

  • Two (2) years’ experience as a police officer or the equivalent in order to be able to draw upon the expertise and experience of traditional police work when performing their duties in a school setting.
  • An SRO should not only be selected based on specific qualifications, but on a genuine desire to work with youth. Due to the nature of the SRO position, the majority of the time is spent interacting with youth. The ability of an SRO to connect with students and provide positive and enriching relationships is a very important trait that will have a positive effect on the school’s overall climate.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Promote the safety and security of University Schools students, staff, faculty and visitors. Patrols the University school areas, facilities and events by foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle. Responds to emergency and nonemergency calls. Investigates and resolves disturbances. Quiets persons disturbing the peace. Issues warnings and/or citations. Takes custody of serious offenders. Administers first aid procedures as needed.

Directs traffic, gives directions, and provides other assistance to faculty, students, staff, and visitors.

Notates, reports, and investigates any suspicious behavior or circumstances; ensures that unauthorized personnel vacate restricted areas. Provide on-site support and advisement related to potential threats, health and safety concerns, severe weather, threat assessment, and safety and security reporting.

Ensure access control compliance and safety at all school buildings.

Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of current issues in K-12 school safety issues and assists with emergency management, training, and prevention strategies. Develops and maintains professional relationships with local law enforcement agencies for reporting, investigations, and case management.
