Description:
School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is currently accepting applications for the position of Science Assistant for Barriere Secondary, Chase Secondary and Clearwater Secondary. The incumbent will be required to travel between work sites on a regular basis.
This is a part-time, permanent position which works 5.5 hours per day, 10 months of the year. Following successful completion of the probationary period, the incumbent will be eligible for Extended Health Benefits, as well as Group Life and LTD Insurance. School District No. 73 belongs to the Municipal Pension Plan.
Under the limited supervision of the Principal(s) and with the direction of the Department Coordinator(s)/Teacher(s), the incumbent is required to carry out a variety of functions related to the operation of a School Science Department and to assist in other areas as required. Work is varied and requires independent judgment and initiative.
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, Principals and other employees of the Board.
Ability to organize and prioritize workload with limited supervision.
Knowledge of chemical safety, storage and disposal
Knowledge of safe laboratory equipment, techniques and equipment maintenance.
Knowledge of chemical spill assessment, clean-up procedures, exposure controls and personal protection.
Knowledge of microbiology, sterile technique, biological safety and disposal.
Working knowledge of computers, spreadsheets, office procedures and office equipment.
Basic computer skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
Grade 12 supplemented with a minimum of 1 year post-secondary courses in sciences.
One year proven previous work experience in area employed.
WHMIS certification

Responsibilities:
Safely prepares all chemicals, necessary equipment and tests experiments required for labs.
Sets up laboratories in preparation for experiments.
Maintains laboratory equipment in safe working order and maintains cleanliness of laboratories, prep areas and equipment.
Promotes compliance with Provincial Science Safety Manual and district safety policies.
Maintains inventory of specimens for dissection and prepares specimens for student use.
Chemical storage, labeling, segregation, inventory in compliance with WHMIS and NFPA regulations.
Identifies chemicals not provincially approved and participates in approval process.
Ensures inventory control for chemical and biological supplies and equipment and participates in yearly inventory procedures.
Preparation and updating of spill plans for restricted chemicals.
Assesses spills to determine level of response required, clean-up technique and use of personal protection and exposure controls.
Ensures safe chemical disposal, identifies and prepares chemicals for annual HAZMAT pick-up.
Ensures availability of MSDS for chemicals in inventory.
Assists students in learning situations.
