QUALIFICATIONS:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- Knowledge of student life and related issues.
- Proven experience in building relationships with partner organizations (campus departments, student associations, etc) based on mutual trust, respect, genuineness, and commitment.
- Tact, reliability, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
- Ability to take initiative, set priorities, work under pressure, multi-task, and be able to work with a minimum of supervision is very important.
- Budgetary and office administration expertise.
- Must have and maintain a working knowledge of relevant software.
- Ability to work with University databases; the ability to troubleshoot daily problems; and the ability to research using library, internet and other resources.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Honours University degree
- Five years of related experience preferred, ideally in a post-secondary setting
Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean – Recruitment and Retention and the Science Student Success Team Lead, the Science Student Support Administrator is responsible for supervising the day to day activities in the Science Student Success Centre (SSSC), collecting, sorting and reaching out to students based on mid-term and final grade data submitted to the SSSC, providing support to mentors, students, staff and parents of students, and conducting research on new and emerging student support services and retention programs used in higher education. The administrator is responsible for taking the lead on a few of the larger events run each year. This includes planning the event, communicating with and organizing other Carleton services for the event and reaching out to our partners, alumni, and other connected individuals to request their presence for the events. The Science Student Support Administrator assists in recruiting, hiring and training team members and supervising volunteer student staff members to ensure they are prepared to respond to their peers on the challenges they are facing.
The Science Student Support Administrator works closely with other departmental and school staff from within the Faculty, in developing programs and enhancing support services for incoming students, and provides support, advice and referrals to students. The incumbent needs to keep up-to-date with the various University services which focus on student recruitment, orientation, and student retention related issues and may be required to represent the SSSC at committee meetings in the absence of the Science Student Success Team Lead.
