Description:

Job Description
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital in Canada, as well as one of the world’s leading research centres in its field. Our services are delivered to help transform the lives of people affected by mental illness and addictions. Our goal is to tailor treatment to each individual, providing patient-centered, comprehensive, coordinated care.
The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre is aligned with CAMH’s strategic goals of improving care for the patients of today and innovating care for the patients of tomorrow. It is intended to promote excellence in the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities (e.g., intellectual disability, autism) and mental health. The Azrieli Centre is dedicated towards finding innovative solutions to solving major challenges in care delivery, and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and to increasing educational opportunities in this field for mental health trainees and providers. The Azrieli Centre is built upon four pillars: Clinical Innovation; Research Excellence; Education and Training; and Knowledge Exchange. Through this work, the Azrieli Centre will help improve education, awareness, diagnosis and treatment of the adult neurodevelopmental population locally, nationally and globally.
The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre is seeking a full-time, permanent, exceptional early to mid-career scientist with a specialized focus on inclusive research on neurodevelopmental disabilities and mental health in adulthood. In this capacity, the successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Scientist & Director of the Centre, spearheading critical research initiatives to engage with both the scientific and mental health care communities associated with the Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre.
Primary responsibilities will involve the establishment and management of a robust research program and team. The Scientist will play a pivotal role in generating and exploring innovative research ideas, while also contributing to the education of emerging scientists. Furthermore, the incumbent will actively promote knowledge exchange within the field of adult neurodevelopmental disabilities.
The selected candidate is expected to provide expert guidance in inclusive research, offering training, supervision, and mentorship to staff and students across diverse disciplines. Emphasis will be placed on leading the development and implementation of impactful research aimed at enhancing care for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and building the capacity of future clinicians in the field. This role will also involve the creation of a productive clinical research stream, seamlessly integrated with clinical services at CAMH targeted toward this population, the training of people with disabilities as co-researchers and educators and active participation in service planning and leadership activities.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish collaborations at the local, national, and international levels. Additionally, practical supervision of undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral trainees, and technical staff is integral to the role. As a Scientist, active leadership in research activities, maintenance of a prolific publication record, and securing extramural funding are key responsibilities. Dissemination of research results through presentations at academic meetings, conferences, and communication with key decision-makers is expected. Participation in leadership advisory groups, both within CAMH and externally, is also a requirement.
Adherence to approved CAMH practices, procedures, and safety standards is imperative in conducting research studies. Beyond research commitments, the Scientist will collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment encompassing both fundamental and clinical research. A commitment to fostering diversity, encouraging teamwork, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements is essential.
As a fully affiliated institution with the University of Toronto, the successful applicant must secure academic affiliation at the Assistant Professor level. The role is based at 1025 Queen Street, Toronto, Ontario.
Job Requirements
The successful applicant is required to have a MD or Ph.D. as well as a minimum of 3 years of relevant postgraduate research experience. Consistent with the mandate of the centre to work together with people with lived experience of disability and families to co-produce research and knowledge products, this role requires demonstrated experience in engagement activities in the neurodevelopmental disability community. Eligibility for an academic appointment at the Assistant Professor level (or higher) is required. The successful candidate will also possess sound judgment, excellent organizational, communication (verbal/written) and strong analytical skills. The demonstrated ability to cultivate internal and external relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. You must be able to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team. The capacity to work with individuals of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required. Bilingualism (English/French) and/or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
Please Note: This position is NOT part of the any bargaining unit.
Salary range: Competitive salary and benefits package.
