JOB DESCRIPTION
Join Thermo Fisher Scientific for exciting work with a team that values performance, quality, and innovation. As a global organization with over $40 billion in revenue and significant investment in R&D, we empower our employees to make important contributions.
Our organization values Diversity & Inclusion as a crucial element for future success. We encourage colleagues to share their diverse perspectives and build an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and can excel.
HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?
We are seeking an experienced scientist with a strong background in electron cryo-tomography (cryo-ET) data acquisition and processing to lead the development of advanced cryo-ET methods for our Pharma and Biotech customers. You will drive applications development for tomography projects, using powerful Krios microscopes, Aquilos, Hydra Bio, and Arctis FIB milling systems, and will manage activities such as collecting and processing tilt series datasets, performing sub-tomogram averaging on both purified protein samples and FIB-milled cellular lamellae, and developing workflows for complex samples like organoids and tissues. Your role will involve growing our network within the cryoEM/ET community through customer collaborations and supporting product development by planning and performing application case studies, ensuring our Cryo-ET solutions stay at the cutting edge of structural biology.
EDUCATION
PhD degree or equivalent experience in Life Sciences, Structural Biology, CryoEM, Image processing, or X-ray crystallography.
What will you do?
- Develop and evaluate cryo-ET applications using our Krios and Glacios microscopes, including the collection and processing of high-resolution datasets from purified proteins and cellular lamellae samples.
- Collaborate with customers to craft and implement proof-of-concept experiments with exciting samples, including tissue samples, directly supporting their scientific endeavors and new product development.
- Support R&D, product development, marketing, and sales by providing applications expertise.
- Communicate new application results at scientific workshops and conferences and support to scientific publications.
- Serve as a Life Science cryo-ET expert.
- Provide feedback to engineering and software development teams on system performance, new design features, hardware qualification, and advanced use-case scenarios for milling and cryo-ET.
- Deliver marketing and sales collateral to the Product Marketing group for inclusion in training materials.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Shown experience in cryo-ET for sub-tomogram averaging; experience in preparing cryo-FIB lamellae or working with volume-EM methods is a bonus.
- Experience working with users and highly technical customers, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to systematically develop new methods, protocols, troubleshooting techniques, and optimize operations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging a diverse audience.
- Ability to independently identify, define, and implement solutions in a dynamic and bold environment.
- Ability to find opportunities (e.g., collaborations that support product strategy).
- Strong project management skills and ownership.
- Leadership qualities, supporting the definition and strategic direction of cryo-ET products.
- Skilled in training and imparting application-specific knowledge to new users and internal customers.
- Comfortable working in a team environment, driving product improvement, and addressing complex issues.
- Ability to build a strong network with customers in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
Responsibilities:
