Description:
This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The Role & Key Responsibilities
From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference. It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent, and respond to harm and keep people safe.
We are looking for an experienced Occupational Health Screening /Practice Nurse or an OH Nurse to work as part of our OHWS Team. In this role you will be supporting Surrey Police and Sussex Police and the collaborated services with Surrey Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS).
The work will involve:
Undertaking periodic and pre-placement medicals for police officers and staff, and health surveillance. Therefore, previous experience of health surveillance and fitness for work assessments would be an advantage.
Depending upon qualifications and experience you may be involved with Case Management. If you desire to move into an OH Nurse Advisor role by further study and participating in the relevant training to maintain and develop your OH practice taking responsibility for your own professional development.
You must be able to maintain confidential, accurate and comprehensive records in both computerised (Cority) and manual format in accordance with legislative requirements e.g. GPDR, Data Protection Act, and be able to provide high standards of OH clinical work and report writing, have an excellent understanding of OH issues, demonstrate knowledge of good working practices and administrative procedures, work calmly under pressure, and respond flexibly to changing and sometimes challenging demands.
You must have excellent written communication skills with the ability to check records and correspondence with exceptional attention to detail, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, to be able to deal courteously and effectively with all employees using sensitivity and tact especially with confidential issues.
Also helping to promote a culture of health and fitness within Surrey Police and Sussex Police, and the two Fire Services (SFRS and ESFRS) by providing a lifestyle and fitness advisory service to all employees.
You will be be happy to travel and be confident working on your own in varying locations.
Skills & Experience
QUALIFICATIONS
- Registered OH Nurse with screening experience or OH Qualification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- The ability to maintain a full knowledge of all current developments in occupation health.
- Be independent and confident in practice.
- Have good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to project confidence and be able to deal effectively, efficiently, and courteously when testing individuals.
- Be able to produce clear, legible, concise, and accurate records, letters, and reports, remaining aware of confidentiality.
- Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure. Able to work as a member of a team.
- Have a reasonable understanding: or the ability to acquire such, of the structure of the Surrey and Sussex Police, SFRS & ESFRS together with a full knowledge of the administration, policies, and procedures in relation to pre-employment processes relevant to Home Office directives.
- Experience of using computer applications for administrative purposes and the willingness to undertake training to become proficient with the relevant health screening equipment and Surrey Police and Sussex Police systems.
Have the specific occupational health qualification along with:
- Immunisation experience
- Venepuncture experience
- Safety critical OH provision
- Experience in the Police or Fire and Rescue Services
The post holder will make most of the day-to-day decisions with support from the Senior OHA, the Clinical Lead or the OH physician.
