The Town of Ponoka is currently recruiting Seasonal Cemetery Caretaker in the Parks, Recreation and Facilities department starting April 2025 to September 2025.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities the Cemetery Caretaker will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Town’s Cemetery, ensuring a respectful and well-maintained environment for families, visitors, and the community. This role requires attention to detail, strong work ethic and a respectful approach to the sensitive nature of the work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

· Minimum 18 years of age.
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping is an asset.
· Experience operating machinery and small equipment such as lawnmowers, backhoes, skid steer and other related tools.
· Strong attention to detail and a high standard of work.
· Good communication and ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically and professionally at all times.
· Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and respect.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Physical labour, including lifting, bending and extended periods of standing or walking and ability to lift and move heavy objects.
· Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including and Criminal Record Check.
· Valid class 5 driver’s license, satisfactory driver’s abstract and access to a personal vehicle.

· Perform general groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, planting and watering flowers and shrubs.
· Maintain Cemetery roads, pathways, and parking areas ensuring they are free from debris and in safe condition.
· Ensure proper care and maintenance of trees, hedges and other vegetation on Cemetery grounds.
· Ensure proper drainage and leveling of graves to maintain the appearance of the Cemetery.
· Clean Cemetery buildings, including Chapel, restroom facilities and maintenance sheds.
· Perform minor repairs and maintenance to infrastructure such as fences, gates and signage.
· Maintain accurate records on internments, grave locations and cemetery plots.
· Assist in preparing burial documents and ensure proper documentation is completed for each interment.
· Assist families, funeral directors and visitors with locating gravesites, providing information as required.
· Perform additional duties and special projects as required.
