About the role
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dedicated and skilled Secondary Lining Section Engineer to join our Major Projects Team, based at Hinkley Point, Bridgwater.
Hinkley Point C is a multi-billion-pound nuclear power station that stands as a cornerstone of the UK’s energy future. This landmark project will play a crucial role in meeting the UK’s energy needs and driving sustainable progress.
Our experts will use state-of-the-art technology to excavate a total of nine kilometres of tunnel, which will be lined with 38,000 concrete segments forming 6000 lining rings. The tunnels will be connected to the seabed by vertical shafts and capped with large intake and outfall heads, each weighing close to 5000 tonnes, that allow sea water to pass into the tunnels. Both the concrete segments and the heads are under manufactured to exacting specifications at a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility at Balfour Beatty’s site in Avonmouth, Bristol.
As a Secondary Lining Section Engineer, you will assist the Tunnel Shift Managers in the SCL/TBM/Secondary Lining tunnel construction shift teams
What you’ll be doing

Some key responsibilities will be:

  • Preparation / review of Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Inspection and Test Plans.
  • TBM - Ensure Tunnel Control Room is occupied by a Tunnel Shift Engineer, at all times, during TBM operation
  • Actively participate in the identification of Environmental hazards and implement site control and preventive measures
  • Read procedures and guidance and receive explanation/discussion from Tunnel Shift Manager/QS
  • Ensure Shift Engineer completes inspection and test plans as required by the Project Management Plan/Specification, including checks of dimension accuracy and quality

Who we’re looking for

To join us in this role, ideally you will have some or most of the following:

  • Full experience of SCL/TBM/Secondary Lining works
  • Experience of face logging to BS 5930
  • Ability to manage shift engineers and operatives
  • Knowledge of BS6164
  • Technically proficient with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field and have the professional credibility to engage and inspire others.
  • Ability to contribute to the design, development, construction, commissioning or maintenance of civil engineering products, equipment, processes, systems, or services.
  • Flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights
  • Holds a current UK driving license and CSCS Card
