THE POSITION:
The Secure Services program is currently looking for a Relief Night Child and Youth Care Counsellor. This is an awake, overnight position and the hours of work are from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The Night Counsellor’s primary responsibilities are to attend to the health and welfare of the children and the security of the programs and campus. Employees in this classification perform essential work as it applies to the care, nurturance, and supervision of our youth.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree or Diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences and/or related academic or work experience is required.
- Experience in Therapeutic Campus-Based Care treatment or congregate care settings (preferred).
- Ability to engage children and youth in the treatment process.
- Demonstrated interest, commitment, consistency, and a high level of personal maturity and responsibility.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
- A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment.
- A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license).
- Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Certified with CYCAA would be considered an asset.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the physical security of the program.
- Conduct program rounds with the evening and morning staff to account for all the children, ensure good program order, safety and security.
- Routinely conduct rounds throughout the night at designated intervals, and as necessary in situations when increased surveillance of the program and children is warranted, e.g., when there are concerns regarding runaways, suicide, self-harm and medical issues.
- Attend to the physical needs and medical requirements of the children.
- Ensure effective follow-through of specific interventions and strategies for each child as per treatment plans and directives.
- Keep apprised of all relevant documentation pertaining to the program and children such as service plans, and the night directives manual.
- Record observations and significant information in appropriate reporting formats.
- Report information regarding night events, child count, and all significant/atypical situations to the Nights Program Coordinator, senior staff or other appropriate personnel as required.
- Maintain an up-to-date bed plan in the night directives book.
- Within reason, attend to housekeeping tasks.
- Attend to administrative tasks as required.
