  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • One year of related security, loss prevention, law enforcement, military, or public safety is required.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills preferred.
  • Experience working in a high-volume customer-focused venue or attraction is preferred.
  • Level II Non-Commission Texas Department of Private Security Certification completion by assigned deadline.
  • CPR/AED (adult, child, infant) and Basic First Aid certificate completion by assigned deadline
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to safety.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • This position requires a valid Class ‘C’ Texas Driver’s License or a valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class “C” Texas Driver’s License within 45 days of becoming employed.
  • Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening background check.
  • Must work in varying climates and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).

Responsibilities:

THE IMPACT YOU’LL MAKE IN THIS ROLE

As a Security Officer, you are responsible for patrolling the zoo grounds and surrounding areas to prevent theft, violence, and other infractions; and ensure operating equipment such as pumps, blowers, heaters, air conditioners, and fans are performing as required. In addition, you will render first aid and maintain public calm during emergencies, including assisting EMTs if needed and providing minor first aid to team members.

As a Security Officer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Maintain a secure environment for guests, staff, and animals by patrolling the zoo premises regularly.
  • Provide a visible presence to deter theft, vandalism, or any other unlawful activities.
  • Act as a first responder in case of emergencies, such as animal escapes, medical situations, or fire alarms.
  • Operate and monitor CCTV systems, alarms, and other security-related technology.
  • Investigate any irregularities observed on security cameras, and document findings as necessary.
  • Report any issues with security systems and ensure they are promptly addressed.
  • Manage access to restricted areas and maintain perimeter security to prevent unauthorized entry.
  • Inspect all entry and exit points and check identification when necessary.
  • Conduct regular checks of doors, windows, gates, and other access points to ensure they are secure.
  • Document and report any incidents, accidents, or unusual activities according to zoo policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily activities, including shift reports, incident reports, and visitor-related issues.
  • Work closely with zoo management to report security concerns and assist in investigations as needed.
  • Understand emergency procedures specific to zoo environments, including protocols for animal escapes and hazardous situations.
  • Collaborate with animal care teams to safely handle situations involving animal welfare.
  • Participate in safety drills, evacuation plans, and training sessions to ensure preparedness.
  • Provide directions and information to guests to ensure a positive visitor experience.
  • Assist in managing guest behavior, including addressing any actions that may pose risks to animals or other visitors.
  • Serve as a point of contact for lost and found items or in cases where guests need emergency assistance.
  • Coordinate with various departments, such as veterinary, animal care, and guest services, to ensure smooth operations.
  • Assist with special events by providing crowd control and managing security needs for large groups or VIP guests.
