Description:
This security officer position will serve as a Department of Public Safety operations center dispatcher and will be responsible for ensuring that police information is properly disseminated according to police department protocol. This individual will answer incoming phone calls, routine as well as emergency. Information will be relayed to University police officers via telephone or radio as the situation requires. This officer may also be required to assist with parking enforcement, traffic control, and building security.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
- Answering all phone calls for all telephone lines located in the police command center.
- Providing all callers with current information on various events, as well as providing them with directions to the appropriate office / department they may be attempting to locate.
- Answering emergency phone calls and dispatching the appropriate equipment as well as University police officers; following established departmental procedures when handling emergency or non-emergency calls.
• Monitoring police actions / dispatching officers via the department radio system. • Monitoring and responding to the computerized fire and security alarms and following the department’s response protocol.
- Monitor and address any issues with the resident hall card access computerized system.
- Monitor and address any issues concerning the CCTV cameras and equipment.
- Monitor and address any and all building alarms that report to the command center.
- Registering all vehicles by selling the appropriate parking permit and collecting the fee for the permit(s).
- Processing parking tickets on the computer system and issuing receipts.
- Collecting and logging of all monies taken in on the shift and completing all forms required.
- Issuing visitor parking passes and ensuring that the proper forms and information are completed.
- Issuing and logging all keys to University personnel and contractors.
- Entering all police activity in the Informant record management system.
- Utilizing the department’s JNET system to obtain vehicle and vehicle operator information.
- Performing miscellaneous clerical duties as needed.
- Performing other security duties as required, such as unlocking campus buildings and classrooms.
- Receiving, logging, and releasing “lost and found” items.
- Filing and updating various records in notebooks and file drawers.
- Calling police officers for overtime assignments as needed and approved.
- Calling other University personnel (tradesmen, custodians, etc.) to make emergency repairs or remove snow / debris, etc.
- Contacting Dean or Grad on call when requested by police.
- Other duties as assigned, such as issuing parking tickets and assisting with traffic control/direction and fingerprinting employees. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to communicate properly on two-way radio system and to answer all phone calls courteously and respectfully, obtaining all necessary information.

- Ability to utilize various computer programs.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to deal with visitors, students, and University personnel. • Ability to become First Aid and CPR certified.
- Ability to attend and successfully complete all training as required.
Operations Center dispatcher may work closely with individuals of diverse backgrounds and race, as well as those of differing religious affiliations, sexual orientation and gender. She/he must possess good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with all members of the campus community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current valid PA driver’s license.
- Current valid Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) certification (if not in hand, this must be obtained immediately after hire).
- Ability to learn and adapt to police protocol and procedures.
- Ability to communicate properly on two-way radio system and to answer all phone calls courteously and respectfully, obtaining all necessary information.
- Ability to function calmly during emergency and other stressful situations.
- Ability to utilize various computer programs.
- Ability to become First Aid and CPR certified.
- Successful performance in an on-campus interview is also required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given for previous security and/or dispatcher experience.
