About The Opportunity
We are looking for a detail-oriented senior accountant to perform and coordinate accounting duties within our organization. The senior accountant’s responsibilities include preparing financial reports, performing account reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, assisting in the preparation of tax returns, and audit preparations, and performing other accounting duties as assigned. To be successful, you should have a solid working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong financial analysis skills, thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures, accuracy, and attention to detail. You are comfortable assisting with the implementation and management of financial systems, internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
Reporting to the Senior Finance Manager your responsibilities will include:
Prepare and maintain workflow charts / documents for Finance processes with a goal to implement and maintain financial reporting procedures to comply with reporting deadlines and requirements.
Responsible for the accounting and management reporting functions, including the preparation of regular financial and management reports, audited statements, CRA filings.
Responsible for the maintenance and update of the organisation’s reports from the reporting app Reporting Xpress.
Act as a secondary contact with external auditors and ensure compliance with CRA requirements.
Assist with the budgeting and planning process as well as audit preparation.
Prepare financial analysis dashboards, graphs, monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts, financial statement review, and prepare ad hoc reports as requested.
Provide backup for payroll and accounts payable.
Provide backup for preparation and filing of GST and PST returns.
Recommend, plan, and implement effective financial systems, internal controls, policies and procedures and process improvements.
Work with the Controller and Leadership to provide appropriate financial management reporting and financial support on strategic projects.
Provide backup and assist with the management of fund accounting processes, ensuring donated funds are disbursed according to designated intent.
Manage the preparation of forecasts, key performance metrics, assist with business plans/budgets, and variance reporting.
Monitor the finance and admin expense budget.
Be a contact for both the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) and BC Cancer related to accounting questions or issues.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
At least four years post-secondary education in accounting, finance or business studies as well as a CPA qualification
Minimum 5 years’ of experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience
Advanced knowledge of forecasting and budgeting principles and practices
Advanced proficiency with accounting/analysis tools, accounting systems and databases such as Excel, Word, Access, Financial Edge, or other ERP system
Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, projects, and activities

CORE KNOWLEDGE + SKILLS:

Extensive knowledge of accounting principles and a full understanding of GAAP, including an understanding of non-profit CRA regulations.
Experience in a not-for-profit environment and/or with fund accounting is considered a strong asset.
Knowledge of business processes and implications
Experience in financial statement preparation
Excellent business and financial acumen
Ability to identify issues and interpret and apply accounting policies as well as communicate recommendations to a wide range of individuals.
Demonstrates teamwork within and across departments to achieve optimal collective results and ability to work in an effective and collaborative manner.
Salary Range: $87,500 – 93,000
