Nelson’s Mayor and Councillors Office has a new opportunity for a Senior Advisor. In this pivotal role you will provide strategic advice and support to the Mayor, and act as a key liaison between elected members and senior Council staff. You will proactively identify issues, risks and opportunities to support achievement of Council’s strategic objectives.
This position requires a person who has a passion for Nelson and an ambition for it’s City Council to be a high performing organisation that provides good quality service and value for money. The role is to provide advice, support and information to help the Mayor achieve their aspirations for the city, and to support Councillors to work well as a team and to ensure strong and effective relationships with Council staff.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead a team of two, consisting of a Communications Adviser and an Executive Assistant. Together the team will provide high quality advice, support and services to the Mayor, Councillors, staff and the public.
We’re looking for someone with the following competencies:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Well-developed relationship management skills including ability to quickly build trust and credibility
- High level of political acumen
- Sound judgement on policy matters
- Ability to lead and motivate a team
- Excellent report writing skills
- A tertiary qualification in an appropriate field or equivalent experience
Ideally you will also have:
- Understanding of the public sector including local government decision making processes and relevant legislation
- Understanding of the role of the Mayor and Councillors in governance and it’s interaction with Management.
- Understanding of and commitment to the principals of the Treaty of Waitangi
