The Software Architect helps define the strategic direction for software development at Beyond, Inc., enables software development teams to deliver business value in a timely, sustainable fashion, and collaborates with software development teams to translate business needs into technical solutions to power shopping experiences for bedbathandbeyond.com, overstock.com, and zulily.com (coming soon).

What you will do

  • Lead technical solutioning and design in collaboration with technology teams; writing detailed design documents and creating technical diagrams to establish and communicate a shared technical vision
  • Establish and document non-functional requirements for technical solutions
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks for software projects
  • Provide technical guidance and support to technology teams
  • Define and document enterprise-wide standards and recommended practices for technology teams
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and recommended practices in the industry
  • Evaluate and select third-party technology partners, including conducting proofs-of-concept for new technologies to evaluate how they fit into our ecosystem
  • Work with technology teams to explore improvements in techniques, patterns, and technologies used in application development, conducting training sessions as needed

Skills required

  • 8+ years of practical experience in Software Engineering
  • 1+ years in a software leadership or staff engineer role or greater
  • Experience building high performance, scalable web applications, preferably e-commerce
  • Excellent communication skills, including organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication
  • Deep understanding of non-functional requirements, including security, regulatory compliance, reliability, scalability, observability, etc., how to define them, measure them, and deliver them
  • Deep understanding of the entire software development lifecycle
  • Ability to work independently with little oversight
  • Ability to make tradeoffs for cost, scope/effort, risk, and quality
