Description:
Global Counsel is looking for a Senior Associate to join its Financial Services practice. The successful candidate will work for a range of UK and international clients, with a focus on retail financial services, especially banking and insurance. The role offers exposure to a wide range of high-profile political, policy and regulatory issues, including the regulatory framework for financial services, capital markets, consumer affairs, cyber security, economic crime, investment and savings.
The successful candidate will have direct policy-making experience, or experience of working in a similarly rigorous business or think tank, as well as an appetite for developing knowledge and skills in a fast-paced working environment. The role will be based in GC’s London office.
SKILLS AND PROFILE
- Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience, e.g. working in the UK government, Parliament or civil service, or for a regulator, business, public-affairs agency, trade association, political party, think tank or trade union, with an emphasis on public policy related to financial services. Experience of issues related to retail financial services (esp. banking and/or insurance) is highly desirable.
- Experience of producing high-quality, concise written analysis of UK politics and financial-services policy and regulation.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Experience of effective engagement with UK public authorities and the financial-services sector. Knowledge or experience of working on other jurisdictions, such as the EU, is desirable.
- Excellent account-management skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated project-management skills, able to handle concurrent tasks effectively and lead projects independently on a tight schedule.
- Fluent in English. Other language skills are beneficial but not a necessity.
- Permanent right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities:
- Research political, policy and regulatory developments in UK financial services and provide clear, concise reports to clients, both in writing and orally.
- Act as a day-to-day contact for clients, building positive relationships and delivering actions and projects to meet needs and deadlines.
- Deliver analysis and advice for clients seeking to respond to, and engage in, the policy- and decision-making process in the UK.
- Identify, map and prioritise key stakeholders across UK public authorities for clients and provide tactical and strategic advice on engagement.
- Maintain and develop a network of contacts to support GC’s reputation as a source of insight and expertise.
- Plan and script engagement with key stakeholders, including where creative responses to new policy proposals are needed.
- Support the design and delivery of workshops, events and thought leadership for GC and for clients on specific policy areas.
- Produce original written content, including policy papers, published blogs, progress reports and marketing material.
- Support business development by researching potential target clients.
