As a Senior BAS Design Technician, you will play a critical role in our commercial project operations. Your duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Design Leadership and Innovation:

  • Lead the design of complex Building Automation Systems (BAS) and integration projects, solving technical challenges and ensuring seamless functionality.
  • Develop innovative approaches for BAS and third-party systems and establish design standards.
  • Mentor team members to enhance their design capabilities.
  • Take the lead on large design projects, resolving layout challenges, and improving project efficiency.

Quality Control and Process Improvement:

  • Enhance quality control processes to catch errors early and improve design reliability.
  • Develop procedures to minimize mistakes and train team members to verify their work.
  • Innovate methods to interpret project specifications effectively and guide the team in managing requirements.

CAD Operations and Documentation:

  • Lead CAD operations for large-scale projects, resolve design challenges, and optimize workflows.
  • Create working drawings using AutoCAD, following established company standards.
  • Use AutoCAD to draft schematic control diagrams, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, and bills of materials for building management systems.
  • Set up, store, manage, and archive drawings in an organized manner according to company standards.
  • Maintain and update drawings to reflect change requests and ensure proper labeling.
  • Organize and print drawing sets as needed.

Equipment Knowledge and System Understanding

  • Understand the selected control equipment (digital controllers, transformers, relays, valves, actuators, etc.) provided from sales estimates.
  • Possess strong knowledge of equipment inputs and outputs to create accurate wiring diagrams and ensure proper system functionality.
  • Ensure compatibility of wiring diagrams, control layouts, and sequence of operations with the selected equipment.

Specifications and Plan Interpretation:

  • Read and interpret plans, mechanical and electrical specifications, and develop appropriate building management systems to meet requirements.
  • Oversee the review of detailed project specifications, ensuring designs align with project goals and contractor needs.

Communication and Teamwork:

  • Communicate with other departments on a project-by-project basis to ensure alignment and successful outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal project managers, electricians, and programmers to complete projects on time and on budget, driving efficiency and meeting client expectations.
  • Engage with customers and consultants as necessary throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring clear communication and addressing any concerns or requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with team leaders about current projects and provide recommendations for process improvements.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary program in Electrical Engineering Technology, Building Automation, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD with experience in creating and managing schematic control diagrams, wiring diagrams, and related drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), including controls, HVAC systems, and their associated inputs/outputs for wiring and functionality.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical system specifications and the ability to interpret and incorporate them into designs.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and drafting for large-scale building automation or similar technical projects.
  • Knowledge of quality control processes and the ability to identify and resolve design issues early.
  • Experience collaborating with project managers, electricians, and programmers to meet project timelines and budgets.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented: Able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including installation, automation, and sales departments.
  • Detail-oriented and organized: Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining accuracy in design documentation, and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Problem-solver: Comfortable addressing design challenges and contributing innovative solutions to improve project efficiency and quality.
  • Excellent communication skills: Able to engage with internal teams, customers, and consultants to ensure alignment and resolve concerns professionally.
  • Familiarity with industry standards for design documentation and project management.
  • An understanding of workflow optimization in CAD operations and experience developing or adhering to CAD standards.
  • A proactive mindset to recommend and implement process improvements within the design team.
