Description:

As a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist the post holder will participate in the delivery of a diagnostic service, by preparing, processing and performing complex diagnostic investigations in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures. The post holder will be expected to have knowledge and skills gained through a HCPC recognised BSc Hons. Degree, post graduate degree or equivalent and to have the supervisory experience necessary to work in all aspects Biochemistry laboratory practice. This will be evidenced by participation in the IBMS CPD portfolio and working in different sections of Biochemistry Laboratory. The post holder will have specific responsibilities within Biochemistry and will be responsibility of governance roles in specific area like Quality, and or Training, Health and Safety and Point of Care Testing.

To ensure knowledge of all instrumentation and that equipment is up to date. The post

  • holder has to be capable of operating such equipment as Abbott Alinity, DS2, Sebia Electrophoresis, Bio Rad Turbo and any new equipment as required
  • To ensure an adequate supply of consumables used in a robust and documented stock rotation syste

Responsibilities:

  • The post holder will lead the team and report to the Chief BMS. The post will be able to supervise the other BMS staff, Associate Practitioners and MLAs.
  • Rotate through all areas of the Biochemistry laboratory, including Point of Care area working according to SOPs.
  • To work within the Biochemistry team to ensure that all specimens are processed in a timely, appropriate manner paying particular attention to detail and quality.
  • Maintenance, development and review of SOPs
  • Able to follow SOPs
  • Maintenance and cleaning of equipment used in the department.
  • Will lead an area of the lab and be responsible for all documentation and techniques in that area.
  • To assist in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance to recognise poor performance and act accordingly.

The Trust is undergoing a procurement process with West Hertfordshire Hospital Trust and East & North Hertfordshire Hospital Trust to create a Pathology Partnership STP wide. This will entail working with a Private Partner (HSL). The process is at the 9 months mobilisation phase after which staff will be TUPE’d across at the end of this process.

  • To ensure that SOPs are provided, maintained and updated and that they are understood and adhered to by all staff.
  • To advise and instruct staff on procedures not covered by SOPs
  • To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs and Health & Safety policies and that staff are competent
  • To perform sweat collection and testing in the Laboratory using manual and automated techniques
  • Undertake highly complex Immuno biochemical/or Point of care investigations requiring specialist knowledge and advanced interpretative and judgmental skills e.g. ANA & tTG screening investigations.
  • Analyse and interpret a wide range of laboratory test results using theoretical and practical knowledge and experience e.g. investigation of Protein Electrophoresis and Long-term monitoring of Diabetes (HbA1c), and ability to use the following equipment or similar equipment Sebia Capillary Tera 3 Abbott Alinity and Sarstedt PVS 1625
