Description:

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here.
Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant.
Do your bit by joining our Technical Support and Assurance (TSA) Team in Scottish Water’s Environment, Planning and Assurance Directorate as a Senior Civil Engineer on a permanent basis.
The role of TSA is to be the: Centre of Engineering Excellence & Technical Leadership across Scottish Water and our partners. Standardise what we deliver, maximising value and quality whilst reducing our emissions.
We have two positions available: one based in Edinburgh and one with flexible location options within Scotland.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll be undertaking technical risk management on capital investment projects as well as providing technical support to our partners and project teams. Your expertise will be instrumental in maintaining water quality, protecting the Environment, and meeting regulatory requirements.
Joining our dynamic team means embracing innovation and the pursuit of engineering excellence. We welcome fresh perspectives and ideas for enhancing our practices.
Your responsibilities will encompass a range of critical tasks, including providing Civil engineering support and technical leadership, championing standardisation, and fostering a culture of safety. Sharing knowledge and best practices will be key to driving continuous improvement across the organisation.
This role requires engagement with planning & operational teams, project delivery teams, internal and external specialists, consultants, the supply chain and the wider water industry. You will evaluate design solutions and assess their suitability based on delivery of required benefits and the balance of cost, carbon, safety and risk.
You will be responsible for providing technical support and assurance by applying your Civil Engineering expertise to the ongoing delivery of Scottish Water’s capital programme throughout all project lifecycle phases, while also supporting standardization efforts. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of Scottish Water’s design library by promoting suitable designs based on insights gained from ongoing project engagements.
You will offer technical support for the continuous development of Scottish Water’s requirements, ensuring adherence to current standards and specifications, and collaborate with key stakeholders to assess the implications of any revisions or waivers. Moreover, you will champion and review emerging technologies and UK best practices within the Technical Support and Assurance team, helping manage Scottish Water’s standards and specifications to enhance efficiency and foster a culture of continual improvement across the organisation.
What you’ll bring
To excel in this role, you’ll need a degree in Civil Engineering, preferably with Chartered status or working towards it with a licensed Professional Engineering Institution. Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders are essential. Experience in water and wastewater design and construction, along with a knack for problem-solving, will set you apart.
This position involves some travel (driving licence preferred), a hybrid work model, and it offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on Scottish Water’s mission.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on the 27th October 2024.
In November 2024, we are moving to a 35-hour week to support the wellbeing and work/life balance of our employees.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We’re also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you’ll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
