Description:

This is a one year fellowship post in the Department of Paediatric Burns & Plastic Surgery at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
Alder Hey provides general paediatric services for the local paediatric population receiving referrals from both general practitioners and the Accident & Emergency Department (the busiest paediatric A & E Department in Europe).
Alder Hey is one of six paediatric burn centres and admits burn patients of all severities, including those requiring Paediatric Intensive Care. A substantial proportion of the plastic surgery carried out by the hospital is the tertiary level care of children with burns and congenital abnormalities such as vascular and hand anomalies. There is a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment facilities with access to a full aspect of paediatric specialist expertise on site. A multidisciplinary team performs paediatric craniofacial surgery as a supra-regional speciality and the Trust provides a regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service.
All paediatric specialties are represented by colleagues working at Alder Hey. There is a consultant-led Community Child Health Service based at Alder Hey and integrated into the Trust.
The postholder will have some fixed elective commitments for general plastic surgery clinics and lists within the service and will participate in other activities across the department, gaining a broad experience across the spectrum of specialist paediatric plastic surgery. The post holder will participate in the consultant on call rota, as well as participating in the regular service activities of the department including teaching, audit and research. This post will be a development role for a senior trainee who ideally will have achieved CCT, although we will consider those within six months of their CCT date. The post will suit those who wish to pursue a career in paediatric plastic surgery, or plastic surgeons who aspire to work in a predominantly adult service but provide a component of paediatric practice.
As one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals, at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, we treat everything from common illnesses to highly complex and specialist conditions. In addition to our main hospital site, we offer paediatric services at a number of community sites and hold local clinics across Merseyside, Cumbria, Shropshire, Wales and the Isle of Man. We also provide specialist inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs in our recently relocated and newly opened state of the art facility.
Alder Hey has a thriving research portfolio and leads research into children’s medicines, infection, inflammation and oncology. We are becoming recognised as one of the world’s leaders in children’s healthcare and research. We contribute to public health, lead cutting-edge research and teach the next generation of children’s specialists. Alongside this is our Innovation Hub, a dedicated space where clinicians and industries can come together to create new products and technologies.
We know that a children’s hospital is different and that our job is more than just treating an illness. To us, every child is an individual. As well as giving them the very best care, we set out to make them feel happy, safe and confident as they play, learn and grow. At Alder Hey we are here to look after a child and their family and that includes mums, dads, brothers and sisters.
This fellowship will provide comprehensive experience in a paediatric plastic surgery unit and the post holder will be involved with the management of paediatric patients in an outpatient, inpatient and emergency setting. There are some fixed commitments for elective lists and clinics but the postholder will have opportunity to join other sub-speciality activities across the department, as well as support the management of trauma
