Description:

This is a very innovative cardiac and thoracic unit based at King’s College Hospital providing a comprehensive local and tertiary referral service to South East London and Kent. King’s College Hospital has an excellent reputation for teaching and training cardiothoracic surgeons.
We have a particular interest in innovative cardiac surgical techniques and run one of the largest transapical/transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve programs in the UK. Other specific areas of expertise are arterial revascularisation, off-pump bypass surgery, mitral valve repair, aortic valve and aortic root repair, minimally invasive surgery for heart valve disease and atrial fibrillation surgery. We also provide thoracic surgery.
Tenure: 6 months in the first instance and mutually agree extension.
The future post holder will be provided with an opportunity of clinical development and is expected to invest time in clinical research. Clinical commitment will involve cardiothoracic surgical on-call rota at Spr level on a one in eight rotation. During the 4 oncalls cover for the cardiac recovery unit ITU services and the busy A&E department needs to be provided.
The appointment involves spending equal amount of time in theatre, on the ward and in outpatients. In theatre the appointee has the opportunity to get trained in all kind of basic adult cardiac surgical techniques and will also have the access to learn special cardiac surgical techniques such as off-pump CABG, complete arterial CABG, mitral valve repair, aortic root repair and replacement techniques, thoracic aortic surgery, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement techniques. In summary, the applicant will have the opportunity to become comfortable with the management of cardiothoracic patients in cardiac theatres, intensive care and outpatients.

This post would be suitable for trainees with a strong interest in cardiothoracic surgery who would like to apply for a numbered training post in the future. Previous experience in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, but not necessarily at SpR level, is essential. Ideally trainees will have completed their MRCP Part One and will have an up to date certification for Adult Life Support training.
Although these appointments are not accredited for training the appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programs within the department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named educational supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors
