Description:

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
Applications are invited for a full-time Clinical Fellow in Luminal Gastroenterology at Southampton Hospital. This is an exciting training post opportunity for 12 months (start date depending on candidate and extendable by mutual consent) working in a thriving academic Gastroenterology unit. The post can be tailor-made to the applicant’s training and portfolio needs but has a focus on inpatient management of gastroenterology patients. Endoscopy and out-patient clinic experience can be provided depending on the applicant’s needs.
UHS is a large, busy, academic, tertiary referral centre for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Intestinal Failure, Neuro-gastroenterology and Complex Endoscopy. We also provide general Gastroenterology services to the local population of Southampton city and the New Forest. We are a team of 16 Consultant Gastroenterologists, 3 Registrars as well as clinical and research fellows and residents at a variety of grades.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will be based with one of the inpatient ward teams and their primary responsibilities will relate to the care of inpatients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and some general medical conditions. This will include patients with complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease and complex Intestinal Failure. The ability to work in a team with a consultant and more junior medical colleagues as well as nurse practitioners and other allied health professionals is vital. The applicant will be expected to support and assist in training more junior team members. Attending consultant ward rounds, leading some ward rounds themselves and performing ward tasks including liaising with other specialties, requesting and performing investigations, writing discharge summaries and liaising with relatives and GPs are integral parts of the role. Good written and spoken English along with keyboard skills are important.
Gastroenterology clinics will also form part of the role, along with other clinical responsibilities with the IBD or IF teams depending on the applicant’s prior experience and career plans. Adhoc endoscopy experience will be available if appropriate to the applicant’s stage of training and career plans.
