Description:

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow to work within King’s Liver Hepato-biliary & Pancreatic and Liver Transplant service to provide and further develop these services for our patients. The post holder will also work on the Hepato-biliary & Pancreatic Surgery on call rota. The post holder is expected to cover all emergency on-call work, usually through the Acute Surgical Unit.
Patients with benign and malignant hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) disease are managed on a single surgical unit within the Liver and Renal Division at King’s College Hospital. The Unit performs around 200 major HPB surgical cases a year. There are 7 consultant surgeons: Parthi Srinivasan, Krishna Menon, Ameet Patel (HPB only), Parthi Srinivasan, Alessandro Parente, Mohamed Elmasry, and Simon Atkinson (pancreas only - joint appointment with Guy’s/St Thomas’s). All have a variety of additional interests including transplantation, laparoscopic and general surgery.
A further Liver Transplant Surgeon (Wayel Jassem) provides on call cover.
HPB in-patients are based on Dawson Ward. There are two full day operating lists five days a week. HPB out-patient clinics are centred on Wednesday and Thursday mornings within the Liver out-patient department. There are four HPB/ HCC/ GI NET multi-disciplinary meetings a week plus a separate pathology meeting.
The adult liver service is comprised of 4 core services – hepatology, liver intensive care, liver transplantation and hepatobiliary medicine/surgery. These services closely inter-digitate offering seamless patient care. The services are supported by CPA approved laboratory services in histopathology, viral hepatitis testing and immunosuppressive monitoring. There are also close links with 3 dedicated liver radiologists.
The liver service combines with Renal and Surgery to form a division with a managerial structure under the Divisional Manager for Liver, Renal and Surgery. The adult Liver Service also combines with paediatric liver services and academics to form the Institute of Liver Studies.
The Clinical Director for Liver is supported by a number of lead clinicians: HPB, Hepatology, Liver Transplantation Surgery, Liver Laboratories, Gastroenterology.
The post-holder will receive annual appraisal and feedback from their educational supervisor Mr Parthi Srinivasan. Progress will be assessed against the competency framework appended to this document.
Two year training programme; one year contract renewable each year for a maximum of two years subject to mutual agreement.
The expectation is that the postholder will experience and achieve the following within two years:
o Participation in outpatient clinics o Participation in MDMs o Lead ward daily ward rounds
o Communicate with and advise external referrals
Surgery outcome/ theatre exposure o Pancreatic resection (open and laparoscopic) o Liver resection (open and laparoscopic) o Surgery for neuroendocrine tumours o Complex renal and caval surgery o Laparoscopic/ open cholecystectomy

o Surgery for benign HPB conditions: biliary reconstruction, fenestration, chronic pancreatitis surgery etc

  • Expected surgical experience after 2 years:

o >20 liver resections o >15 pancreatico-duodenectomies
o >10 distal pancreatectomies
