Description:

This is a replacement post. The remit of the postholder/s will be to work within the multi– disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients within the service. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.
The post will provide substantial experience in all aspects of general and specialist
Hepatology. It would be particularly suitable for individuals who are committed to a career in Hepatology, and have prior experience in the speciality. However, all candidates with an interest in the speciality will be considered.
The successful candidate will be involved in fixed clinical commitments which would be determined by both their clinical training needs and the service requirements of the Institute; an example timetable is outlined below. The post involves rotation through 4 major subspecialties: Liver Transplantation, Liver cancer, Advanced chronic Liver disease and Viral hepatitis.
There is an option for the successful candidate to join the ‘out of hours’ specialist hepatology and endoscopy rota if suitably qualified following a period of induction. The trainee will always have access to Consultant support during on call periods. The on call rota (1 in 7) will involve taking part in the specialist hepatology rota and does not involve any commitment to acute general medicine.
The successful candidate will also need to provide occasional ward cover during the day when required and there will be an element of administrative duties.
The Institute of Liver studies was set up by the late Professor Roger Williams in 1966, and since then has stood for excellence in liver clinical care and research. It provides perhaps the most comprehensive liver disease service in the world.
The Liver Transplant programme, Adult and Paediatric, is one of the largest ( >200 cases p.a.) and most prestigious in the country offering ground-breaking techniques such as split liver, the use of auxiliary livers and machine perfusion. Complementing the transplant programme is a large and innovative service in hepatobiliary surgery (HPB).
The Liver ITU provides comprehensive service for the management of critically ill patients with liver disease (acute liver failure, decompensate chronic liver disease, hepatobilary surgery and trauma and liver transplantation) and has a reputation for innovative research into novel clinical treatments such as extra corporeal liver support. The ITU facilities housed in 19 bed area in close proximity to the liver wards, theatres and laboratories.
The ward services have recently expanded to provide in patient beds for all aspects of liver disease. Patients are admitted as local, regional, supra-regional or international referrals. There is supporting the ward based service a dedicated outpatient service, providing daily clinics to all our patient groups.
The post will be based at King’s College Hospital and this will be reviewed within 3 months of the post holder commencing in post. The aim of the post is for the successful candidate to gain substantial experience in all aspects of clinical Hepatology.
All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As an employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients
