Description:

The Swansea Bay Geriatrics Department serves patients across Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot via its hyperacute front door services at Morriston Hospital, including OPAS (older persons assessment service), and community outreach programmes. Swansea Bay also has an extensive network of virtual wards and has an acute clinical team led by Geriatricians in the Community.
Your principle place of work is Neath Port Talbot Hospital and you maybe required to work at any site within your employing organisation. There are currently three inpatient medical wards within Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Ward B2 – 28 beds, Ward C – 32 beds and Ward D - 40 beds. The Neuro-Rehabilitation ward has 14 beds.
The successful candidate will be required to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary Clinical Team to promote the safety and well-being of the patients, under the supervision of the Consultant.
This is a permanent post and will be required to work on a Full Time basis and therefore will be contracted to work basic 40 hours per week.
The service works closely with our partner organisations, both statutory and voluntary, and has established links with local General Practitioners.
The Senior Clinical Fellow post is in Internal Medicine and participates in the work of Medicine Department. In addition, appointees will be able to gain experience and training in a wide range of medical subspecialties and participate in research or teaching.
You will be required to provide prospective ward cover; Monday to Friday in Medical / Elderly Care / Stroke Rehabilitation .
Specialty experience and training in inpatient care will be gained in a number of placements from: Geriatric Medicine and Stroke Rehabilitation.
Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.
The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of South West Wales.

Swansea has a range of shops, cozy cafes, great restaurants, art galleries as well as being able to offer good outdoor lifestyle with its beautiful coastline and beaches on the Gower Peninsula. Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and liberty stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City football club.
You will be expected to
- Cover designated patients on medical / Elderly Care / Stroke Rehabilitation wards
- Provide Clinical Support to Foundation Programme Doctors
- Participate fully in the Postgraduate Department activities and undertake CPD and audit (see below).
- Teach Medical Students
You will provide a clinical service in conjunctions with your colleagues and under the direction of a Consultant, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness. Working with your colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff . In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board. You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety
You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice as laid down by the guidance of ‘Good Medical Practice’ issued by the General Medical Council.
